Heme Oxygenase-1 (HMOX-1) and inhibitor of differentiation proteins (ID1, ID3) are key response mechanisms against iron-overload in pancreatic β-cells

Mawieh Hamad et al.

Summary: Iron overload promotes the generation of reactive oxygen species, leading to oxidative stress in pancreatic beta-cells. Through RNA-sequencing and functional experiments, it was found that HMOX1, ID1, and ID3 play key roles in the protective response against iron overload-induced stress in beta-cells. The differential expression of genes in response to iron overload includes TGF-beta, regulating stem cells, ferroptosis, and HIF-1 signaling pathways.
