Mid-Cretaceous marine Os isotope evidence for heterogeneous cause of oceanic anoxic events

Hironao Matsumoto et al.

Summary: During the mid-Cretaceous, the Earth experienced drastic environmental perturbations, mainly triggered by submarine volcanic activities. High-resolution Os isotopic records indicate that most of these events were associated with massive submarine volcanic episodes, but some minor events may have been caused by monsoonal activity.

Bacinella, a discrete type of Mesozoic calcimicrobial structure

Bruno R. C. Granier

Summary: The controversy surrounding Bacinella irregularis and Lithocodium aggregaturn involves discussions about whether they belong to the Codiaceae or not. They are considered as biosedimentary structures built by microbial communities with strong corroding abilities, forming different types of substrates.

Tracking magmatism and oceanic change through the early Aptian Anoxic Event (OAE 1 a) to the late Aptian: Insights from osmium isotopes from the westernmost Tethys (SE Spain) Cau Core

Rafael Martinez-Rodriguez et al.

Summary: This study presents a chemostratigraphic analysis of the relationship between global carbon and osmium cycles during the Aptian, showing the impact of Large Igneous Province (LIP) magmatism on seawater composition over a long period of time. The results highlight the asynchronous relationship between carbon and osmium cycles, and the slow recovery from the unradiogenic seawater composition produced by Ontong Java Plateau volcanism.

Mapping paleocoastlines and continental flooding during the Phanerozoic

Adam T. Kocsis et al.

Summary: Sea levels play a crucial role in shaping the Earth's surface, influencing evolution and sedimentation processes, while ancient topographies can be reconstructed by understanding tectonic processes, lithological evidence, and present-day topographies. By constantly updating geological data sources, we can refine ancient topography and bathymetry models, assess the accuracy of digital paleogeographic maps, and further investigate the history of our planet through fossil data.

Determining the style and provenance of magmatic activity during the Early Aptian Oceanic Anoxic Event (OAE 1a)

L. M. E. Percival et al.

Summary: The study investigates the role of Large Igneous Province (LIP) activity in triggering the Early Aptian Oceanic Anoxic Event (OAE 1a) and emphasizes the importance of the Greater Ontong-Java Plateau (G-OJP). Globally consistent evidence of LIP activity during OAE 1a is indicated, but geographical variations in mercury trends were observed. The findings suggest that G-OJP emissions of mantle carbon were more likely to have played a major role in initiating OAE 1a than thermogenic volatiles associated with High Arctic LIP (HALIP).

High-Resolution C-Isotope, TOC and Biostratigraphic Records of OAE 1a (Aptian) From an Expanded Hemipelagic Cored Succession, Western Tethys: A New Stratigraphic Reference for Global Correlation and Paleoenvironmental Reconstruction

Jose M. Castro et al.

Summary: This study presents a high-resolution carbonate C-isotope stratigraphy for the Aptian in the Cau core (Spain) and focuses on the early Aptian Oceanic Anoxic Event (OAE 1a). It reveals a record of pulses of volcanism and methane emissions through sharp delta C-13(carb) negative spikes. The C-isotope profile across OAE 1a perfectly records the defined segments worldwide and proposes the Cau core as a new reference section for the Aptian.
