A Retrospective Cohort Study on Mortality and Neurodevelopmental Outcomes of Preterm Very Low Birth Weight Infants Born to Mothers with Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy

Yumi Kono et al.

Summary: The study found that maternal hypertensive disorders of pregnancy can impact mortality and neurodevelopmental outcomes in preterm very low birth weight infants, depending on their intrauterine growth status and gestational age. In certain gestational age groups, infants of mothers with hypertensive disorders but appropriate for gestational age had lower risks compared to infants of mothers without hypertensive disorders. However, infants of mothers with hypertensive disorders but small for gestational age had higher risks in some gestational age groups compared to infants of mothers without hypertensive disorders.

Course of the sFlt-1/PlGF ratio in fetal growth restriction and correlation with biometric measurements, feto-maternal Doppler parameters and time to delivery

A. Andrikos et al.

Summary: The study found various associations between the levels of biomarkers in maternal blood and sonographic parameters in FGR cases, with significant correlations between the sFlt-1/PlGF ratio and umbilical artery, uterine arteries, ductus venosus, CPR, femur length, and birth weight. A higher sFlt-1/PlGF ratio upon study inclusion was associated with shorter time to delivery, and a rapid daily increase of this ratio was significantly linked to the clinical progression of the disease.

Brain Sparing Effect on Neurodevelopment in Children with Intrauterine Growth Restriction: A Systematic Review

Maria Jose Benitez-Marin et al.

Summary: The study systematically reviewed the consequences of fetal brain sparing on neurodevelopment in children with placental intrauterine growth restriction, finding that brain sparing was associated with poor cognitive function while cerebral redistribution was related to better executive function and behavior.

Prenatal intake of omega-3 promotes Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway, and preserves integrity of the blood-brain barrier in preeclamptic rats

Asmaa M. ShamsEldeen et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that omega-3 has a protective effect on neurovascular complications of preeclampsia, improving cognitive function, reducing blood pressure, decreasing brain tissue water content, inhibiting oxidative stress, reducing proteinuria, and enhancing the expression of Wnt/beta-catenin proteins.

Preeclampsia and Neurodevelopmental Outcomes: Potential Pathogenic Roles for Inflammation and Oxidative Stress?

Aaron Barron et al.

Summary: Preeclampsia is a common and serious hypertensive disorder of pregnancy, with in utero exposure potentially acting as an environmental risk factor for various neurodevelopmental disorders. The mechanisms are uncertain, but inflammation and oxidative stress likely play a major role in mediating this association.

Circulating Maternal sFLT1 (Soluble fms-Like Tyrosine Kinase-1) Is Sufficient to Impair Spiral Arterial Remodeling in a Preeclampsia Mouse Model

Summary: By overexpressing hsFLT1 in mice, the study found that circulating maternal hsFLT1 is sufficient to induce typical maternal preeclampsia-like symptoms, impairing spiral artery remodeling independently from the fetoplacental compartment.

Summary: The study demonstrates that therapeutic hypothermia can lead to neuroprotection by suppressing the upregulation of inflammatory genes in myeloid cells induced by hypoxia-ischemia and reducing the infiltration of peripheral macrophages.

Association Between Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy and Neurodevelopmental Outcomes Among Offspring

Judith S. Brand et al.

Summary: This Swedish register-based study found that hypertensive disorders of pregnancy may slightly increase the risk of offspring developing autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), while associations with intellectual disability (ID) and cognitive performance are likely confounded by shared familial (environmental or genetic) factors.
