Effect of High-Intensity Strength Training on Knee Pain and Knee Joint Compressive Forces Among Adults With Knee Osteoarthritis: The START Randomized Clinical Trial

Stephen P. Messier et al.

Summary: This randomized clinical trial involving 377 participants with knee osteoarthritis found that high-intensity strength training did not significantly improve knee pain or knee joint compressive forces compared to low-intensity strength training and attention control at 18 months. These findings do not support the use of high-intensity strength training over low-intensity strength training or attention control in adults with knee osteoarthritis.

Placebo response and effect in randomized clinical trials: meta-research with focus on contextual effects

Sigurlaug H. Haflidadottir et al.

Summary: On average, about half of the overall treatment effect in RCTs can be attributed to contextual effects. Trials with blinded outcome assessors and concealed allocation tend to have higher contextual effects, which appear to increase with placebo effect, lower mean age, and higher proportion of females.
