An experimental approach to assessing the impact of ecosystem engineers on biodiversity and ecosystem functions

Gianalberto Losapio et al.

Summary: Plants as ecosystem engineers create habitats and facilitate biodiversity maintenance, while the diversity of plants enhances ecosystem productivity and functioning. Little is known about the role of ecosystem engineers in the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. Experimental findings suggest that ecosystem engineers carrying plants have a positive impact on attracting more diverse flower visitors in plant communities.
