Investigation on the Propulsion of a Pump-Jet Propulsion an Effective Wake

Han Li et al.

Summary: This article numerically investigates the propulsion and vortical flow of a preswirl pump-jet propulsor (PJP) under effective wake conditions using improved delayed detached eddy simulation. The study shows that the interaction between the hull and PJP significantly affects the propulsion performance and flow characteristics, particularly around the duct and stator. The results also indicate that the flow direction has little effect on the rotor, while the appendage wake notably increases the thrust fluctuation and the thrust on the duct and stator is sensitive to the flow direction.

Assessment of transition modeling for the unsteady performance of a pump-jet propulsor in model scale

Han Li et al.

Summary: This study assessed the effects of transition modeling on predicting the performance of a PJP propulsor, finding significant impacts on performance prediction and sensitivity of flow details to transition modeling approaches. Emphasizing the importance of unsteady prediction, the study also explored changes in pressure and friction components during transition. Results showed that transition modeling significantly influenced performance predictions, with a slight increase in force fluctuation when considering transition effects.

Effects of duct parameter on pump-jet propulsor unsteady hydrodynamic performance

Qiaogao Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of duct parameters on the open water performance of pump jet propulsor. It finds that the length-diameter ratio and the expansion ratio of duct outlet have significant effects on performance and vortex control, while the tip clearance ratio and the shrinkage ratio of duct inlet have minor effects on performance but noticeable changes in tip clearance flow. The incidence angle has significant impacts on tip clearance vortices, resulting in more considerable performance changes.

CFD study of hull wakes in oblique flow at model and full scales

Yu-Xin Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper presents a numerical study on the hull wakes under oblique flow conditions and analyzes the scale effect. Results show that the oblique flow considerably changes the hull wake field. The comparison between model and full scales reveals significant differences in wake patterns and mean wake fraction.

Attenuation of the Tip-Clearance Flow in a Pump-Jet Propulsor by Thickening and Raking the Tips of Rotor Blades: A Numerical Study

Xue-Qin Ji et al.

Summary: A method is proposed to weaken the tip-clearance flow in pump-jet propulsors by adjusting the geometry of rotor blades, which can reduce the generation of tip-leakage vortex and weaken its impact. Although the efficiency of the rotor decreases, the influence on the performance of the pump-jet propulsor is relatively small.

Wake instabilities of a pre-swirl stator pump-jet propulsor

Han Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the wake of a pump-jet propulsor with a pre-swirl stator using stress-blended eddy simulations, analyzing the flow field in detail through a systematic comparison of wake morphology under different loading conditions. The study examines the evolution, interaction, and destabilization of vortices, and observes the instabilities in the wake evolution process. The study also finds that secondary vortices enhance the destabilization process and lead to chaotic evolution in the wake.
