Associations Between Historical Redlining and Present-Day Heat Vulnerability Housing and Land Cover Characteristics in Philadelphia, PA

Leah H. Schinasi et al.

Summary: This study quantified the impact of historical institutional racism on heat vulnerability in Philadelphia by assessing the associations between historically redlined areas and present-day housing characteristics. The results showed that historical sociodemographics played a role in the associations, particularly in relation to the presence of mature tree canopy. Adjusting for present-day sociodemographic factors did not substantially affect the findings, suggesting a need for further investigation into the complex relationships between historical racism, residential segregation, and heat vulnerability.

Housing and asthma disparities

Tyra C. Bryant-Stephens et al.

Summary: The burden of asthma disproportionately affects minority and low-income communities, with racial and socioeconomic disparities in asthma prevalence, exacerbations, and related death. Poor housing conditions in many minority communities are a legacy of historical policies and practices imbued with structural racism. Reinvesting in these neighborhoods and communities to provide healthy housing is crucial for promoting asthma health equity.
