Number of growth days and not length of the growth period determines radial stem growth of temperate trees

Sophia Etzold et al.

Summary: This study on the daily radial growth of 160 individuals of seven temperate tree species in Switzerland over 8 years revealed that growth is influenced by day length, air, and soil moisture. The number of days with growth largely determines annual growth, with growth being constrained by day length. Researchers call for incorporating these non-linear intra-annual and species-specific growth dynamics into tree and forest models to improve predictions under climate change.

Ecological forecasting of tree growth: Regional fusion of tree-ring and forest inventory data to quantify drivers and characterize uncertainty

Kelly A. Heilman et al.

Summary: This study applies a Bayesian state-space model to analyze the ecological complexity of Pinus ponderosa var. brachyptera in the southwestern US using a fusion of tree-ring and forest inventory data. The study quantifies the effects of climate, tree size, stand density, site quality, and their interactions on tree growth and identifies the uncertainties associated with these effects. Results show negative effects of fall-spring maximum temperature and positive effects of water-year precipitation on tree growth. The study also reveals that tree vulnerability to climate stress increases with competition, tree size, and poor site conditions. Future climate scenarios are projected to cause significant declines in tree growth.

The 2018 European heatwave led to stem dehydration but not to consistent growth reductions in forests

Roberto L. Salomon et al.

Summary: Heatwaves have strong and sometimes irreversible impacts on forest ecosystems. This study used high-temporal resolution dendrometer data to investigate the effects of the 2018 European heatwave on tree growth and water status. The findings showed that while annual stem growth was not consistently reduced, stems experienced temporary shrinkage due to water depletion. Conifer species were less capable of rehydrating overnight compared to broadleaves, indicating lower resilience to transient stress.

Climate Change Risks to Global Forest Health: Emergence of Unexpected Events of Elevated Tree Mortality Worldwide

Henrik Hartmann et al.

Summary: Recent observations of elevated tree mortality following climate extremes have raised concerns about global forest health. Lack of sufficient data and understanding to identify if these observations represent a global trend toward increasing tree mortality. Sudden events highlight the potential unexpected impacts of climate change on forests.

Tropical tree growth driven by dry-season climate variability

Pieter A. Zuidema et al.

Summary: According to a pantropical tree-ring network, dry-season climate variability is a primary driver of tropical tree growth. The study found that woody biomass growth increases with dry-season precipitation and decreases with dry-season maximum temperature. The strength of these dry-season climate responses varies among sites and is influenced by drier, hotter, and more climatically variable regions.

Distribution of biomass dynamics in relation to tree size in forests across the world

Camille Piponiot et al.

Summary: Tree size determines the interaction between trees and their environment, including climate change. Through analyzing 25 large-scale forest plots, it was found that in warmer forests, aboveground biomass and woody productivity are more broadly distributed with respect to tree size. In warmer and wetter forests, aboveground biomass and woody productivity are more right skewed, with a longer tail towards large trees. Small trees contribute more to productivity and mortality than to biomass.

Cross-scale interaction of host tree size and climatic water deficit governs bark beetle-induced tree mortality

Michael J. Koontz et al.

Summary: The study analyzed data and found an interaction between host size and climatic water deficit, resulting in higher mortality rates for large trees in dry, warm conditions, but not in cooler or wetter conditions.

The interspecific growth-mortality trade-off is not a general framework for tropical forest community structure

Sabrina E. Russo et al.

Summary: This study analyzed demographic data of 1,111 tree species in tropical forests and found that the growth-mortality trade-off is more pronounced in undisturbed forests compared to disturbed forests. The research suggests that resource allocation strategies play a key role in determining the trade-off, raising questions about its universality in understanding tropical forest community structure.
