Effects of canopy cover and neighboring vegetation on the early development of planted Austrocedrus chilensis and Nothofagus dombeyi in north Patagonian degraded forests

Marina Caselli et al.

Summary: The study found that in both xeric and mesic sites, the survival and growth of both Nothofagus dombeyi and Austrocedrus chilensis seedlings were negatively impacted when canopy cover was below 30%. Removing neighboring vegetation improved survival of both species at the xeric site and growth of both species at the mesic site. Canopy cover and removal of neighboring vegetation interacted to improve survival and growth of A. chilensis, while for N. dombeyi, the effects were independent but improved both survival and growth. Austrocedrus chilensis showed greater tolerance to high radiation and low soil moisture, making it more suitable for planting in exposed conditions, but both species could be used successfully for restoring degraded A. chilensis stands.

On the sensitivity of food webs to multiple stressors

David Beauchesne et al.

Summary: Evaluating the effects of multiple stressors on ecosystems is increasingly important in the face of global changes. Overlooking species interactions can lead to underestimating the impacts of stressors, with synergistic and antagonistic effects common in food webs. The type of interaction influences species' susceptibility to stressors, with omnivory and tri-trophic interactions being particularly sensitive.
