Focusing on cognitive potential as the bright side of mental atypicality

Lorenza S. Colzato et al.

Summary: This article discusses the positive potential of selective cognitive dysfunction and proposes a two-step approach to identify and develop corresponding training methods. Traditional views on mental health focus on cognitive impairments, whereas we should pay attention to the cognitive potential that selective dysfunctions might bring.

What Do Meta-Analyses Have to Say About the Efficacy of Neurofeedback Applied to Children With ADHD? Review of Previous Meta-Analyses and a New Meta-Analysis

Pablo Riesco-Matias et al.

Summary: This study reviewed previous meta-analyses and conducted a new one on neurofeedback for children with ADHD, finding significant improvement in inattention symptoms. However, preliminary results suggest that stimulant medication may be more effective than neurofeedback. New RCTs establishing the connections between ADHD symptom measurements, learning after neurofeedback, and neurophysiological measures could enhance the quality of conclusions.

A novel approach to intra-individual performance variability in ADHD

Annet Bluschke et al.

Summary: Patients with AD(H)D show increased intra-individual variability in behavioral performance, likely reflecting dopaminergic deficiencies. Differences in performance between healthy controls and AD(H)D patients do not persist continuously over longer time periods, alternating with periods of no differences. Medication status and subtype do not affect this performance pattern. The findings suggest phasic deficiencies in the dopaminergic system of AD(H)D patients, not sufficiently ameliorated by first-line pharmacological treatment, with important clinical and scientific implications.

The World Federation of ADHD International Consensus Statement: 208 Evidence-based conclusions about the disorder

Stephen Faraone et al.

Summary: This study curated 208 empirically supported statements about ADHD based on strong evidence. These statements were endorsed by 80 authors from 27 countries and 6 continents, as well as 366 readers who agreed with the contents of the document. The meta-analysis findings provide firm statements about the nature, course, outcome causes, and treatments of ADHD, which can help reduce misconceptions and stigma.

Non-invasive vagal nerve stimulation enhances cognitive emotion regulation

Stefanie De Smet et al.

Summary: The study suggests that active taVNS can improve cognitive reappraisal of emotions and reduce the intensity of emotional responses, compared to sham stimulation. Although significant differences were found in behavioral measures of cognitive emotion regulation, no differences were observed in physiological responses to emotional stimuli between the two groups. Further research is needed to assess the objective measures of neural activity during cognitive emotion regulation following taVNS.

Cognitive control in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD): Proactive control adjustments or consistent performance?

Lindsay M. Fruehauf et al.

Summary: The study found that individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) do not show significantly altered proactive control abilities compared to psychiatrically healthy controls. Although there were differences in OCD severity and mood symptoms, there were no significant differences in cognitive control task performance.

Computation noise in human learning and decision-making: origin, impact, function

Charles Findling et al.

Summary: The limited computational precision of cognitive inference is a major contributor to the variability and suboptimality of perceptual and reward-guided decisions made under uncertainty. Theoretical and experimental evidence from psychology and neuroscience sheds light on the impact and function of this "computation noise" for learning and decision-making.

A neural noise account of Gilles de la Tourette syndrome

Alexander Muenchau et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an exploration of the characteristics and potential explanations of Tourette syndrome, focusing on neural noise and its adaptation in information processing. Through neurophysiological and imaging approaches, further investigation into the pathophysiology of Tourette syndrome is essential to pave the way for novel interventions targeting neural noise levels and patterns directly in Tourette syndrome.
