Neurofilament light as an outcome predictor after cardiac arrest: a post hoc analysis of the COMACARE trial

Lauri Wihersaari et al.

Summary: Plasma NfL is a reliable biomarker for predicting outcomes in comatose patients following out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, with higher mean arterial pressure (MAP) associated with lower NfL concentrations.

Postanoxic electrographic status epilepticus and serum biomarkers of brain injury

Anna Lybeck et al.

Summary: The study found that patients who developed electrographic status epilepticus (ESE) after cardiac arrest had higher levels of serum NfL at 72 hours post-arrest, suggesting increased secondary neuronal injury compared to matched patients without ESE. Associations with GFAP reflecting glial injury were less clear in this study. The design of the study could not exclude imperfect matching or other mechanisms contributing to the higher levels of biomarkers of brain injury seen in patients with ESE.

Serum markers of brain injury can predict good neurological outcome after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest

Summary: The study found that low levels of brain injury markers in blood are associated with a good neurological outcome. Incorporating biomarkers into neuroprognostication may help prevent premature withdrawal of life-sustaining therapy.
