Synergistic Dual-Additive Electrolyte for Interphase Modification to Boost Cyclability of Layered Cathode for Sodium Ion Batteries

Jing-Jing Fan et al.

Summary: The electrolyte additive, succinic anhydride (SA), serves as a synergistic filming additive with fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) to significantly improve the lifespan and stability of dual-additive Na/Na0.6Li0.15Ni0.15Mn0.55Cu0.15O2 (NLNMC) batteries. The addition of SA leads to a more uniform and stable interphase layer on the cycled NLNMC material, containing more oxygen-rich organic species and less NaF. Additionally, SA also influences the interphase layer in the sodium anode part, as shown by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and energy dispersive spectrometer results.

An in-situ formed stable interface layer for high-performance sodium metal anode in a non-flammable electrolyte

Ming Zhu et al.

Summary: By using a non-flammable electrolyte, a stable solid-electrolyte-interface (SEI) layer was successfully generated in situ, effectively suppressing side reactions and dendrite growth in sodium metal batteries. The addition of DTD promoted the stability of the SEI layer, allowing for dendrite-free sodium plating/stripping with high coulombic efficiency and long-term stability in Na symmetric cells.

Knocking down the kinetic barriers towards fast-charging and low-temperature sodium metal batteries

Xueying Zheng et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the development of a high-voltage Na/Na3V2(PO4)(2)O2F battery that can withstand temperatures as low as -30 degrees Celsius and fast charging up to 30C. By utilizing a weakly solvated electrolyte and a biphasic artificial SEI, the researchers have successfully achieved low-temperature and fast-charging performances for sodium metal batteries. The design strategy highlights the importance of de-solvation and SEI control in overcoming kinetic barriers under extreme conditions.
