Signatures of atomic structure in subfemtosecond laser-driven electron dynamics in nanogaps

Luke Bhan et al.

Summary: Coupled Maxwell and quantum-mechanical equations are used to simulate the electron dynamics in nanogaps in systems containing thousands of atoms. It is found that besides the carrier-envelop phase, bow-tie or gap shape, and gap size, the atomistic structure also significantly alters the electron dynamics.

DFTpy: An efficient and object-oriented platform for orbital-freeDFTsimulations

Xuecheng Shao et al.

Summary: In silico materials design face challenges due to the computational complexities of Kohn-Sham DFT, but new-generation kinetic energy density functionals have enabled successful applications of orbital-free DFT in various semiconductor and finite systems. DFTpy, an open-source software written in Python 3, implements OFDFT and outsources computationally expensive operations to third-party modules, offering easy implementation of new features for fast simulations.

Thermoelectric Ratchet Effect for Charge Carriers with Hopping Dynamics

Alois Wuerger

Summary: The huge Seebeck coefficients observed recently for ionic conductors are shown to arise from a ratchet effect where activated jumps between neighbor sites are rectified by a temperature gradient, thus driving mobile ions toward the cold. For complex systems with mobile molecules like water or polyethylene glycol, there is an even more efficient diffusiophoretic transport mechanism, proportional to the thermally induced concentration gradient of the molecular component. Without free parameters, the model describes experiments on the ionic liquid EMIM-TFSI and hydrated NaPSS, and qualitatively accounts for polymer electrolyte membranes with Seebeck coefficients of hundreds of k(B)/e.

On-chip sampling of optical fields with attosecond resolution

Mina R. Bionta et al.

Summary: This on-chip optoelectronic device is capable of sampling low-energy near-infrared waveforms with sub-optical-cycle resolution under ambient conditions. By using resonant nanoantennas for field-driven photoemission, the device can create attosecond electron bursts to probe weak optical waveforms and reveal the localized plasmonic dynamics of the emitting nanoantennas. Applications include broadband time-domain spectroscopy, time-domain analysis of nonlinear phenomena, and detailed investigations of strong-field light-matter interactions.

Nanoantenna design for enhanced carrier-envelope-phase sensitivity

Drew Buckley et al.

Summary: Engineering the geometry and resonance frequency of planar plasmonic nanoantennas can enhance the emitted CEP-sensitive photocurrent, leading to significant improvements in CEP sensitivity and signal-to-noise ratio. By adding curved sidewalls leading to the apex and tuning the resonance wavelength, the net CEP-sensitive current per nanoantenna can be improved by 5-10 times, and the signal-to-noise ratio can be increased by 50-100 times, informing the next generation of nanoantenna designs for ultrafast photoelectron metrology and petahertz electronics applications.

Theory of Seebeck ratchet in a noncentrosymmetric electron-phonon coupled system

Yugo Onishi et al.

Summary: The passage discusses the thermoelectric effect of a noncentrosymmetric electron-phonon coupled system, where a temperature difference between electrons and phonons induces an electric current. It also explores possible realizations of this mechanism.

High-performance carbon nanotube electronic ratchets

Ji Hao et al.

Summary: The advancements in low-power portable/wearable electronic devices require technologies that can provide power without bulky battery storage. Electronic ratchets, such as conjugated polymer-based and semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotube (s-SWCNT) channels, have been proposed as solutions to convert AC signals or electronic noise into stable DC power. These s-SWCNT electronic ratchets demonstrate higher output power and improved stability compared to polymer-based analogs, showing promise as energy harvesting devices for portable, low-power applications.
