Starquakes in millisecond pulsars and gravitational waves emission

E. Giliberti et al.

Summary: So far, only transient gravitational waves produced by catastrophic events of extra-galactic origin have been detected. However, it is generally believed that there should also be continuous sources of gravitational waves within our Galaxy, such as accreting neutron stars, which could potentially be detected in the near future. This study investigates the physical picture of these sources and calculates the maximum ellipticity caused by starquakes, finding it to be in good agreement with observations and below the highest observed neutron star frequency.

Modeling the Galactic Neutron Star Population for Use in Continuous Gravitational-wave Searches

Brendan T. Reed et al.

Summary: Searches for continuous gravitational waves from unknown Galactic neutron stars provide limits on the shapes of neutron stars. Using a simple model of the spatial and spin distribution of Galactic neutron stars, the total number of neutron stars probed can be estimated, aiding in optimizing future searches with improved sensitivity. Third-generation GW detectors may greatly increase the number of neutron stars probed to a given ellipticity.

Modelling neutron star mountains

Summary: This study reviews research on the rotation and gravitational radiation of neutron stars, proposes a new scheme for modeling neutron star mountains, and finds that the largest quadrupoles are significantly lower than previous estimates.

Neutron star crust in Voigt approximation: general symmetry of the stress-strain tensor and an universal estimate for the effective shear modulus

Andrey Chugunov

Summary: In this study, the elastic properties of neutron star crust in the static Coulomb solid model were discussed, treating atomic nuclei as non-vibrating point charges and neglecting electron screening. The results are also relevant for solidified white dwarf cores and other materials that can be modeled as Coulomb solids. The study demonstrates that the Coulomb part of the stress-strain tensor exhibits additional symmetry and does not depend on the structure or composition of the material.
