Two-dimensional simulations of solar-like models with artificially enhanced luminosity I. Impact on convective penetration

A. Le Saux et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of modifications on convective penetration in a solar-like model with numerical simulations. The results show that increasing the energy input leads to an increase in the characteristic overshooting depth. High-order moments analysis reveals similar flow structures under moderate enhancement factors. The study highlights the importance of penetrative downflows on the thermal background below the convective boundary and the connection between local heating and plume dynamics.

Calibrating core overshooting parameters with two-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations

J. Higl et al.

Summary: The uncertainty of mixed regions around convective zones in stellar evolution is investigated through multi-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations to calibrate an overshooting parameter. Increasing the overshooting parameter beyond a certain value changes the mixing behavior completely, providing limits on the parameter. Diffusive mixing component due to internal gravity waves is identified, suggesting a need for a mass-dependent overshooting description in simulations of less massive stars.

Two-dimensional simulations of solar-like models with artificially enhanced luminosity I. Impact on convective penetration

I Baraffe et al.

Summary: In this study, two-dimensional simulations of convection in a solar-like model were performed using the MUSIC code to explore the impact of artificial modifications to the luminosity and thermal diffusivity on convective penetration. The results indicate that an increase in energy input leads to an increase in the characteristic overshooting depth, while the impact of penetrative plumes alters the thermal background and affects the width of the overshooting layer.

Suppression of lithium depletion in young low-mass stars from fast rotation

T. Constantino et al.

Summary: Researchers utilized rotating 1D stellar evolution models to study the evolution of stars, incorporating modifications to the temperature gradient in convection zones and a criterion for convective instability inspired by rotating 3D hydrodynamical simulations. By suppressing convection and modifying the temperature gradient, they were able to simulate lithium depletion in rapidly rotating stars, matching observations of lithium spread in young open clusters.

Rotation suppresses giant-scale solar convection

Geoffrey M. Vasil et al.

Summary: The lack of giant convection cells near the Sun's outer surface has puzzled solar modelers for a long time. The study proposes an explanation, suggesting that rotation strongly influences internal dynamics and leads to suppressed convective velocities. It predicts a characteristic convection length scale of approximately 30 Mm and a dynamical Rossby number less than unity below the near-surface shear layer.
