The SAMI Galaxy Survey: trends in[α/Fe] as a function of morphology and environment

Peter J. Watson et al.

Summary: The study reveals that galaxies in high-density environments show an earlier truncation of star formation compared to those in low-density environments, with elliptical galaxies exhibiting a higher alpha-enhancement which decreases along the Hubble sequence towards spirals. The findings suggest strong contributions from both environment and mass-based quenching mechanisms, particularly in elliptical galaxies.

The SAMI Galaxy Survey: the third and final data release

Scott M. Croom et al.

Summary: The SAMI Galaxy Survey has released data for a total of 3068 unique galaxies, including 888 unique galaxies for the first time. Each galaxy has two primary spectral cubes covering the blue and red optical wavelength ranges, additional spatially binned spectral cubes, and standardized aperture spectra. 2D maps derived from parametrized fitting to the emission-line and absorption-line spectral data are also provided for each galaxy, offering insights into various physical properties.

The SAMI Galaxy Survey: stellar population and structural trends across the Fundamental Plane

Francesco D'Eugenio et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the Fundamental Plane (FP) of early-type galaxies using data from the SAMI survey. It finds that the FP residuals are most strongly correlated with luminosity-weighted simple stellar population (SSP) age, rather than with structural observables. The scatter in the FP is partly attributed to the broad age and Upsilon(*) distribution at any given surface mass density.

[α/Fe] traced by H II regions from the CALIFA survey The connection between morphology and chemical abundance patterns

S. F. Sanchez et al.

Summary: The study explores the chemical enrichment process in spiral galaxies by using the [O/Fe] ratio as an indirect proxy for the [alpha/Fe] ratio. The results show that [O/Fe] follows a decreasing pattern with [Fe/H] similar to the [alpha/Fe] ratio, and its absolute scale depends on the stellar mass and morphology of the galaxies. The use of different chemical evolution models helps to explain these patterns based on variations in star formation history, star formation efficiency, and inflow and outflow rates of the galaxies.

The SAMI Galaxy Survey: a statistical approach to an optimal classification of stellar kinematics in galaxy surveys

Jesse van de Sande et al.

Summary: Large galaxy samples from multiobject integral field spectroscopic surveys are now allowing for statistical analysis of the z similar to 0 galaxy population using resolved kinematic measurements. The study uses the SAMI Galaxy Survey data to investigate kinematic distributions based on stellar mass and ellipticity, and employs a Bayesian mixture model to analyze the observed mass distribution, revealing the need for multiple kinematic distributions at different mass thresholds. This study validates previous conclusions from smaller IFS surveys and emphasizes the importance of selection criteria for identifying different kinematic classes based on data quality.

The SAMI galaxy survey: Mass and environment as independent drivers of galaxy dynamics

Jesse van de Sande et al.

Summary: The kinematic morphology-density relation of galaxies is influenced by both stellar mass and environment, with satellite galaxies showing lower average rotation compared to isolated-central galaxies and group/cluster centrals. High-density environments also result in lower mean rotation values, but the differences between low and high-mass galaxies are similar regardless of environmental density.

The SAMI Galaxy Survey: Bulge and Disk Stellar Population Properties in Cluster Galaxies

S. Barsanti et al.

Summary: By separately exploring the stellar population properties in the bulge and disk of double-component cluster galaxies, we found that redder bulges tend to be more metal-rich than the disks, consistent with previous results. Among the studied galaxies, 62% were found to have bulges that are 2-3 times more metal-rich than the disks. Additionally, we observed that 23% of galaxies have older bulges compared to the disks, while 34% have younger bulges. The remaining 43% of galaxies have bulges and disks with statistically indistinguishable ages.
