Microbiological Quality and Heavy Metal Concentrations in Slipper Oyster (Crassostrea iredalei) Cultured in Major Growing Areas in Capiz Province, Western Visayas, Philippines: Compliance with International Shellfish Safety and Sanitation Standards

Rolando Pakingking et al.

Summary: The slipper oyster farming areas in the Philippines are facing issues with microbiological quality and heavy metal concentrations. High levels of fecal coliforms in the water and Escherichia coli in oysters were found, not meeting the standards set by the European Union and the US. Additionally, the concentrations of heavy metals in oyster meat were within regulatory limits. Immediate rehabilitation and depuration are necessary to improve the quality and safety of the oysters.

Revision shock in Pacific oysters taxonomy: the genus Magallana (formerly Crassostrea in part) is well-founded and necessary

Daniele Salvi et al.

Summary: The description of the genus Magallana has been supported by robust phylogenetic analysis and molecular phenotypes, meeting all currently accepted criteria for naming clades as taxa. The classification with three genera reflects the evolutionary diversity of the subfamily and is consistent with taxonomic ranking criteria adopted for other oyster subfamilies.

Growth and survival of oyster Crassostrea iredalei (Faustino, 1932): A comparison of wild and hatchery-bred spat in grow-out culture

Ma Junemie Hazel L. Lebata-Ramos et al.

Summary: Oyster farming is an important industry in both developed and developing countries, but overexploitation of natural stocks has caused declines in spat fall and unstable production. This study compared the growth and survival of wild and hatchery-bred oyster spat and found that they had similar growth rates and survival rates in grow-out culture, indicating the potential of hatchery-bred oyster spat as seeds for addressing the declining number of spat fall in natural oyster beds.

Light wavelength and intensity effects on larval settlement in the Pacific oyster Magallana gigas

Hee-Jin Kim et al.

Summary: Through experiments, it was found that different light conditions have different effects on the settlement of Pacific oyster larvae. Red and near infrared light have a settlement-inducing effect, while near ultraviolet, blue, white, and green light can disrupt larval settlement.

Levels and health risk assessment of mercury, cadmium, and lead in green mussel (Perna viridis) and oyster (Crassostrea iredalei) harvested around Manila Bay, Philippines

Ulysses M. Montojo et al.

Summary: The study found that levels of mercury, cadmium, and lead in green mussels and oysters from coastal provinces of Manila Bay were below regulatory limits, posing no health risks to consumers. Further risk assessments on other fishery commodities in the area are recommended to ensure consumer safety.

Effects of Light Intensity and Wavelength on the Phototaxis of the Crassostrea gigas (♂) and Crassostrea sikamea (♀) Hybrid Larvae

Xuekai Zhang et al.

Summary: The study revealed that hybrid oyster larvae exhibit positive phototaxis to specific light intensity and wavelength, with 5 lx being the positive phototaxis light intensity for eyeless hybrid larvae, and the acceptable light intensity range for eyespot hybrid larvae expanding to 5-10 lx but negatively reacting to light over 25 lx. Green light had a positive effect on larvae gathering, while red light induced eyespot larvae settling. This research may contribute to the understanding of hybrid oyster larvae phototaxis and the impact of light pollution on benthic communities and coastal system restoration.
