Suptavumab for the Prevention of Medically Attended Respiratory Syncytial Virus Infection in Preterm Infants

Eric A. F. Simoes et al.

Summary: The study indicates that suptavumab did not reduce the overall rate of childhood RSV respiratory infections due to a newly circulating mutant strain of RSV B. Genetic variation in circulating RSV strains will continue to pose challenges to prevention efforts.

Nebulised ALX-0171 for respiratory syncytial virus lower respiratory tract infection in hospitalised children: a double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled, phase 2b trial

Steve Cunningham et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the safety and antiviral activity of nebulised ALX-0171 in children hospitalized with RSV lower respiratory tract infection. Results showed faster viral load reduction with ALX-0171 treatment compared to placebo, but no significant improvement in clinical outcomes. Safety profile was similar between ALX-0171 and placebo groups. Future RSV antiviral studies should consider earlier intervention and more precise measurement of objective outcomes.

Epidemiological and virological characteristics of respiratory tract infections in children during COVID-19 outbreak

Summary: The study found that outpatient visits and respiratory tract infections in children significantly decreased during the COVID-19 outbreak. Adequate protective measures and isolation in children may help prevent respiratory virus infections in children.

Estimation of the Timing and Intensity of Reemergence of Respiratory Syncytial Virus Following the COVID-19 Pandemic in the US

Zhe Zheng et al.

Summary: This study found that virus introduction from external sources was associated with the spring and summer epidemics in 2021. Pediatric departments should be alert to large RSV outbreaks in the coming seasons, the intensity of which could depend on the size of the spring and summer epidemic in that location. Enhanced surveillance is recommended for both prophylaxis administration and hospital capacity management.

COVID-19 public health measures and respiratory viruses in children in Melbourne

Yara-Natalie Abo et al.

Summary: The study investigated the epidemiology of respiratory viruses in children before and during the 2020 SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, finding that strict public health measures and border closures implemented by the Victorian government were successful in eliminating community transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in Melbourne. This resulted in a significant reduction in other respiratory virus infections in children. Identifying sustainable and effective ongoing public health interventions to reduce transmission of RSV and influenza could lead to reduced morbidity and mortality in children and requires further research.

Summary: Despite effective infection control measures in Tokyo, a high number of respiratory syncytial virus infections were reported, possibly due to the resumption of social activities for children.
