Acetylation of cellulose - Another pathway of natural cellulose aging during library storage of books and papers

Antje Potthast et al.

Summary: The study reveals that gaseous acetic acid is produced during the storage of historic paper objects, leading to hydrolytic cleavage and acetylation of cellulosic material. Various analytical methods prove the presence of organic acetates on cellulosic paper matrices. The acetylation effect was quantified for model papers and naturally aged paper samples. Further research is needed to explore the conservation aspects and suitable storage conditions regarding this acetylation phenomenon.

Oxidative degradation of paper ? A minireview

Michal Jablonsky et al.

Summary: Paper, as the most important carrier of information and knowledge, is subject to chemical, physical, and biological degradation. While acid hydrolysis has been considered the main factor contributing to paper degradation, oxidative modes of degradation have received less attention. This review focuses on oxidation mechanisms, particularly those involving reactive oxygen species and reactions catalyzed by transition metals. The oxidation of paper induced by iron-gall inks in historical documents is discussed in more detail due to its importance as part of mankind's cultural heritage.
