An Easily Accessible Microfluidic Chip for High-Throughput Microalgae Screening for Biofuel Production

Summary: Microalgae are important green energy resources with high efficiency in fixing carbon dioxide, and are commonly used for biofuel production. This study developed a microfluidic platform for optimizing biofuel production of microalgae, utilizing hanging-drop microfluidic chips fabricated with a cheap CNC micro-milling technique. By culturing Botryococcus braunii in parallel on these chips, and introducing UV-induced mutations, the lipid content of the microalgae was enhanced, showing increased growth and lipid production. This hanging-drop microfluidic system has the potential to facilitate microalgae mutation breeding and cultivation optimization.

Summary: The development of a dual electro-optical biosensor for herbicide monitoring based on algal biosensors is reported in this study. A systematic study was conducted to select and characterize a group of 28 different genetic variants of the alga, with the CC125 strain chosen as a case study. The biosensor demonstrated high sensitivity, repeatability, long-lasting working time, and storage stability in standard solutions and real samples, with low interference in the presence of heavy metals and insecticides.
