Associations of refractive errors and retinal changes measured by optical coherence tomography: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Mohammad Amin Salehi et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis evaluated the alterations in retinal optical coherence tomography (OCT) measurements in myopic and hyperopic patients compared to controls. The results showed that highly myopic eyes had significantly lower retinal thickness in multiple regions, while hyperopic eyes had significantly thicker average peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) compared to controls.

Abberant inverted U-shaped brain pattern and trait-related retinal impairment in schizophrenia patients with combined auditory and visual hallucinations: a pilot study

Chuanjun Zhuo et al.

Summary: Untreated first episode schizophrenic patients with combined auditory and visual hallucinations exhibit alterations in brain structure and function, as well as retinal abnormalities. The majority of these patients show reduced gray matter volume, increased global functional connectivity density, and thinning of the retina compared to healthy controls.

Neuroimaging Biomarkers in Schizophrenia

Nina Kraguljac et al.

Summary: Schizophrenia is a complex neuropsychiatric syndrome with no objective biological markers available for diagnostic or treatment decisions. Neuroimaging is considered a promising tool for biomarker development in schizophrenia, as it can capture phenotypic variations in disease targets, validate new treatment targets, predict response, aid in therapy selection, and provide rationale for personalized treatments.

Retinal nerve fibre layer and peripapillary vascular density by optical coherence tomography angiography in schizophrenia

Ozlem Budakoglu et al.

Summary: This study evaluated retinal nerve fibre layer thickness and peripapillary vascular density by optical coherence tomography angiography in patients with schizophrenia. Thinner retina and lower vascular density were found in the temporal quadrant of schizophrenia patients compared to healthy controls. Therefore, this technique may be useful in detecting and monitoring progressive neurodegeneration in schizophrenia patients.

Glial Cells in Glaucoma: Friends, Foes, and Potential Therapeutic Targets

Mariana Y. Garcia-Bermudez et al.

Summary: Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide, affecting around 80 million people by 2020. Despite lowering intraocular pressure being the only proven treatment to slow disease progression, a significant number of patients still go blind. Therefore, the search for alternative treatment strategies is crucial.

Exploring the role of macular thickness as a potential early biomarker of neurodegeneration in acute schizophrenia

Sukanto Sarkar et al.

Summary: This study compared RNFL thickness and MT in acutely ill schizophrenic patients with healthy controls, finding a significant reduction in macular thickness in patients but not in RNFL thickness. The results suggest that macular thinning may be an early biomarker of neurodegeneration in acute schizophrenia.

Patients with first-episode untreated schizophrenia who experience concomitant visual disturbances and auditory hallucinations exhibit co-impairment of the brain and retinas-a pilot study

Chuanjun Zhuo et al.

Summary: Limited data on structural brain and retina alterations in schizophrenia patients with visual disturbances (VDs) were compared in this study. Patients with auditory hallucinations (AHs) in addition to VDs showed more severe reductions in gray matter volumes and retinal thickness, indicating potential reciprocal deteriorating actions between VDs and AHs in schizophrenia patients.
