Phylogenomic Resolution of Sea Spider Diversification through Integration of Multiple Data Classes

Jesus A. Ballesteros et al.

Summary: This study utilized multiple molecular data categories to resolve the phylogenetic relationships of sea spiders, revealing their basal topology and including families that were not fully sampled before. In addition, molecular divergence time estimation confirmed the Ordovician origin of crown group sea spiders, showing that in the evolutionary process sea spiders exhibit greater resilience to mass extinction episodes compared to mollusk and echinoderm lineages.

Taxonomic Sampling and Rare Genomic Changes Overcome Long-Branch Attraction in the Phylogenetic Placement of Pseudoscorpions

Andrew Z. Ontano et al.

Summary: Long-branch attraction is a systematic artifact that leads to erroneous groupings of fast-evolving taxa. Pseudoscorpion placement is particularly unstable across data sets, but support for a sister group relationship of pseudoscorpions and scorpions increases when more basally branching taxa are sampled.

Fine structure of the epicuticular secretion coat and associated glands of Pedipalpi and Palpigradi (Arachnida)

Michael Seiter et al.

Summary: Pedipalpi is a poorly studied clade of arachnids that includes whip spiders, short-tailed whip scorpions, and whip scorpions. Recent research showed that whip spiders and some species of whip scorpions have a solid epicuticular secretion coat on their exoskeleton. This study enhances the understanding of the small, enigmatic orders of Arachnida.

Phylogenomic Subsampling and the Search for Phylogenetically Reliable Loci

Nicolas Mongiardino Koch

Summary: Phylogenomic subsampling is a method of selecting small sets of loci from large genome-scale data sets for phylogenetic inference, often motivated by computational limitations or testing the robustness of phylogenetic results. This study reveals a predictability in the patterns of covariance of gene properties across different phylogenomic data sets and proposes a multivariate method to optimize phylogenetic signal while controlling for bias. Common subsampling approaches are found to introduce unintended effects in gene properties, and selecting loci at random is shown to be more effective than other methods.

The genome of a daddy-long-legs (Opiliones) illuminates the evolution of arachnid appendages

Guilherme Gainett et al.

Summary: Chelicerate arthropods exhibit dynamic genome evolution, with ancient whole-genome duplication events affecting several orders. The genome of the harvestman Phalangium opilio does not show evidence of whole-genome duplication and contains a single Hox cluster. Functional studies of Hox genes and Egfr in Phalangium opilio reveal their roles in the development of elongate legs and the formation of tarsomeres. The loss of Egfr function in this arachnid species suggests a potential evolutionary mechanism underlying the independent gains of supernumerary tarsomeres in arthropods.
