Genomic evidence of past and future climate-linked loss in a migratory Arctic fish

K. K. S. Layton et al.

Summary: Despite the lack of understanding how most taxa will respond to future climate change, this research integrates genomics and environmental modeling to assess the responses of an ecologically and economically important Arctic species. The findings reveal past declines in effective population size in the Northwest Atlantic, indicating potential northward shifts and the loss of commercially important life-history variation in response to climate change. The genomic approach used here identifies both past and future declines that impact species persistence, ecosystem stability, and food security in the Arctic.

High genetic diversity and low differentiation reflect the ecological versatility of the African leopard

Patricia Pecnerova et al.

Summary: Research reveals that the genomic diversity of African leopards is higher than that of other large cats, likely due to their exceptionally high effective population size maintained throughout the Pleistocene. Compared to other large cats, African leopards exhibit ongoing gene flow and very low population differentiation within their population.

Local environment-driven adaptive evolution in a marine invasive ascidian (Molgula manhattensis)

Yiyong Chen et al.

Summary: The study utilized RADseq to assess population genetic diversity and investigate genetic differentiation in the marine invasive ascidian Molgula manhattensis. The results revealed significant genetic differentiation, low gene flow, and no evidence of population bottleneck in invasive populations. Environmental factors, particularly salinity-related variables, were identified as crucial evolutionary forces influencing adaptive divergence among invasive populations.

Epigenetic inheritance and reproductive mode in plants and animals

Dafni Anastasiadi et al.

Summary: Epigenetic inheritance is common in plants and animals, with impacts on phenotype and adaptation influenced by genetic, intrinsic, and extrinsic factors. Future research needs to address many knowledge gaps and a framework is provided to guide studies on the generational persistence and ecoevolutionary significance of epigenomic patterns.

Heritability of DNA methylation in threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus)

Juntao Hu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the heritability of DNA methylation between marine and freshwater ecotypes of threespine stickleback, identifying stable CpG sites and revealing the contribution of additive genetic variance as well as cis- and trans-meQTLs to methylation variation. The findings demonstrate a potential role for DNA methylation in adaptation to divergent environments and enhance understanding of the heritable basis of population epigenomic variation.
