Vertebrate Chromosome Evolution

Joana Damas et al.

Summary: The study of chromosome evolution has gained renewed interest due to advancements in DNA sequencing technology, particularly in producing chromosome-scale whole-genome assemblies. This review focuses on the history, methods, discoveries, and current challenges in the field, with a special emphasis on vertebrate genomes. The relationship between chromosome rearrangements and phenotypic evolution, adaptation, and speciation is examined in detail, along with a critical review of methods for identifying and characterizing chromosome rearrangements. Looking to the future, the accumulation of hundreds and eventually thousands of chromosome-scale assemblies presents significant technical and scientific challenges.

Molecular mechanisms and topological consequences of drastic chromosomal rearrangements of muntjac deer

Yuan Yin et al.

Summary: Muntjac deer underwent rapid species radiation and dramatic chromosome fusions within a short period of time. Repeat sequences likely mediated illegitimate recombination to result in chromosome fusions, and 3D chromatin architecture around fusion sites have no significant change, while significant interactions across fusion sites were gradually established after speciation.

Chromosome-Level Genome Assembly Reveals Significant Gene Expansion in the Toll and IMD Signaling Pathways of Dendrolimus kikuchii

Jielong Zhou et al.

Summary: This study presented a high-quality, chromosome-level reference genome for Dendrolimus kikuchii based on Nanopore, Pacbio HiFi sequencing and the Hi-C capture system, containing 15,323 protein-coding genes and 63.44% repetitive sequences. Phylogenetic analyses indicated that D. kikuchii may have diverged from common ancestor of several insects approximately 122.05 million years ago. Many gene families were expanded in the D. kikuchii genome, particularly those of the Toll and IMD signaling pathway, which included 10 genes in peptidoglycan recognition protein, 19 genes in MODSP, and 11 genes in Toll, shedding light on the potential mechanisms involved in protecting D. kikuchii against external substances and pathogens.
