Hemoglobin variants in southern China: results obtained during the measurement of glycated hemoglobin in a large population

Anping Xu et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the prevalence, characteristics, and distribution of hemoglobin variants in southern China, identifying 117 types of Hb variants including 18 new mutations. Most carriers of Hb variants exhibited normal hematological parameters, while patients with compound heterozygotes for the Hb variant and thalassemia showed varying degrees of anemia. The findings suggest a high prevalence of genetic diversity in hemoglobin variants in the population of southern China.

Molecular characterization of hemoglobinopathies and thalassemias in Northern Guangdong Province, China

Zhanzhong Ma et al.

Summary: This study investigated the molecular characterization of hemoglobinopathies and thalassemias in Northern Guangdong Province, China among 10,285 subjects. The prevalence rates were found to be 0.46% for hemoglobinopathies and 21.02% for thalassemias, with the most common types being Hb Q-Thailand and various deletions in alpha- and beta-thalassemia genes. The results highlighted the importance of regional differences in the molecular characterization of thalassemias and provided valuable information for prevention and control efforts.
