Evolutionary Genomics of a Subdivided Species

Takahiro Maruki et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the genetic variation of 10 populations of Daphnia pulex, a freshwater microcrustacean, and found evidence of both local adaptive divergence and between-species divergence. However, the specific nature of the relevant variation remains unclear and cannot be associated with particular loci.

The rapid, mass invasion of New Zealand by North American Daphnia pulex

Zhiqiang Ye et al.

Summary: Nonindigenous members of the Daphnia pulex complex have been found in many lakes in New Zealand in the past 20 years, originating from single asexual clones with the South Island populations identified as Daphnia pulicaria Forbes and North Island populations as hybrids of D. pulicaria Forbes and D. cf. pulex sensu Hebert. The invasive Daphnia in both islands are phylogenetically clustered with North American Daphnia, suggesting a North American origin. The South Island clones have identical mitochondrial genomes, indicating a single founder clone which is an obligate asexual, with a colonization time estimated to be around 60 years ago.
