Electron probe microanalysis: A review of recent developments and applications in materials science and engineering

Xavier Llovet et al.

Summary: Electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) is a widely used microanalytical technique for material characterization, developed since the 1950s. Significant methodological developments in EPMA have occurred in the last three decades, including the incorporation of new instruments and improvements in techniques, leading to a wide range of new possibilities for material characterization. EPMA has shown great capabilities in materials science and engineering applications, and continues to offer new research opportunities.

Thermo-oxidative degradation during sintering of polyethylene particles

Amirmehdi Salehi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the active thermo-oxidative degradation mechanisms during sintering of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) particles and their impact on the morphological evolution of the particles. Two distinct degradation regimes were observed, with branching dominating in the presence of low oxygen concentration and chain scission becoming dominant with the diffusion of more oxygen, leading to accelerated pore evolution.

MAST-SEY: MAterial Simulation Toolkit for Secondary Electron Yield. A monte carlo approach to secondary electron emission based on complex dielectric functions

Maciej P. Polak et al.

Summary: MAST-SEY is an open-source Monte Carlo code that calculates secondary electron emission using input data generated entirely from first principle calculations. It utilizes the complex dielectric function and Penn's theory for inelastic scattering, and relativistic Schro?dinger theory for elastic scattering through a partial-wave expansion method. The code allows users to explicitly include momentum dependence of the dielectric function and utilize first-principle density of states for a more complete description of the underlying physics.

Secondary electron-, Auger electron- and reflected electron-spectroscopy study on sp2-hybridization carbon materials: HOPG, carbon glass and carbon fiber

Dabao Lu et al.

Summary: The study found that secondary electron spectroscopy (SES) signals generated as a byproduct in the measured full direct AES spectrum hold the potential for the identification of allotropic materials, as SES signals are material dependent and influenced by the density of unoccupied states of the materials. This study indicates that SES is applicable to the structural characterization of allotropic materials.

Influence of electron landing energy on the measurement of the dimensional properties of nanoparticle populations imaged by SEM

Loic Crouzier et al.

Summary: The study focused on the impact of electron landing energy on the measurement of nanoparticle sizes by SEM. It was found that the measured diameter varied with LE, and modeling of SEM secondary electron yield was used to relate this variation to the information volume in the material. An optimal value of LE was determined depending on the chemical composition and particle size to limit bias in SEM measurements.

Monitoring Carbon in Electron and Ion Beam Deposition within FIB-SEM

Nicholas T. H. Farr et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that Secondary Electron Hyperspectral Imaging can be used to monitor the changes in carbon in FIB-SEMs, especially the accumulation and bonding changes caused by electron/ion beam exposure. Additionally, Plasma FIB Xe exposure shows the capability to remove carbon contamination from the surface of a Ti6246 alloy without the need for chemical surface treatments.

Enhanced mass transfer in nanofluid electrolytes for aqueous flow batteries: The mechanism of nanoparticles as catalysts for redox reactions

Jungmyung Kim et al.

Summary: Introducing carbon-based nanoparticles into the electrolytes of vanadium redox flow batteries enhances electrochemical performance by improving oxidation/reduction kinetics and mass transfers. The defects in nanoparticles in nanofluidic electrolytes act as active sites for electrochemical reactions, enhancing electron and mass transfers at the active region interface to boost battery performance. The redox mechanism shows that the VO2+/VO2+ electrolytes have increased active area, while V2+/V3+ electrolytes act as catalysts to reduce the activation energy of redox reactions.

A novel characterisation approach to reveal the mechano-chemical effects of oxidation and dynamic distension on polypropylene surgical mesh

Nicholas T. H. Farr et al.

Summary: Polypropylene (PP) surgical mesh, successful in abdominal hernia repair, can lead to serious clinical complications when used for stress urinary incontinence or pelvic organ prolapse repair in the pelvic floor; evidence suggests that PP fibers are susceptible to oxidative damage and play a role in causing complications. The specific host response mechanisms against the material remain poorly understood.

Advanced XPS characterization: XPS-based multi-technique analyses for comprehensive understanding of functional materials

Mark A. Isaacs et al.

Summary: X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) has become a mature analytical technique in the materials community, but its misuse is often highlighted by recent reviews. Advanced XPS techniques or a combination with complementary surficial probes can provide additional information beyond the standard appreciation. This review aims to introduce some atypical applications of lab-based XPS and combinatorial approaches of related surface analysis to the general materials audience.
