The Planctomycetia: an overview of the currently largest class within the phylum Planctomycetes

Ines Rosado Vitorino et al.

Summary: The phylum Planctomycetes consists of bacteria with unique features in prokaryotes. They exhibit cell division by budding, lack the cell division protein FtsZ, and have complex cell structures. Although planctomycetes are widespread, the number of described species and isolated strains in pure cultures is limited compared to their observed diversity in metagenomes or environmental studies. There has been an increasing interest in planctomycetes recently, leading to the discovery of many new species and improved accessibility to pure cultures. This review summarizes the taxonomic information and discusses the phylogeny, morphology, physiology, ecology, and genomic traits of all described species in the class Planctomycetia, which currently has the highest number of characterized members within the phylum Planctomycetes. This comprehensive overview provides valuable insights into the biology of these fascinating bacteria.

Sex differences in growth performance are related to cecal microbiota in chicken

Lei Cui et al.

Summary: This study revealed that the cecal microbiota of male chickens is closely related to glycan metabolism, while that of female chickens is more closely linked to lipid metabolism, leading to differences in gene expression levels associated with glycan and lipid metabolism. Additionally, positive correlations were found between glycan and lipid metabolism and specific bacterial genera in male and female chickens, respectively, indicating sex-dependent associations between chicken growth performance and cecal microbiota.

Sequence subtyping of Trichomonas gallinae from Bonelli's eagle (Aquila fasciata) during four years (2014-2017) reveals that MLS type is associated with lesions

M. C. Martinez-Herrero et al.

Summary: Avian trichomonosis is an important parasitic disease affecting Bonelli's eagles, with this study revealing the prevalence, severity of lesions, and association with different MLS types. The research found that nest-raised chicks in the wild are at higher risk for infection and development of lesions. Discordances in sample testing methods were also noted, with swab-ITS-PCR showing greater sensitivity in detecting the parasite.
