Electron FLASH Delivery at Treatment Room Isocenter for Efficient Reversible Conversion of a Clinical LINAC

Mahbubur Rahman et al.

Summary: This study aimed to develop procedures for efficient reversible conversion of LINAC to deliver UHDR beams for FLASH radiation therapy. The measured dose rate and depth dose profiles demonstrated successful achievement of 10 MeV UHDR beams at the treatment room isocenter. The stability of the beam output met clinical requirements, but further investigation of ramp up time and dose monitoring is needed.

Ion collection efficiency of ionization chambers in ultra-high dose-per-pulse electron beams

Rafael Kranzer et al.

Summary: The study investigated the ion collection efficiency of vented ionization chambers in ultra-high dose-per-pulse electron beams, evaluating the impact of chamber design and electric field strength. Experimental results showed that reducing electrode distance and increasing field strength can improve ion collection efficiency and reduce polarity effects.

Proton FLASH: passive scattering or pencil beam scanning?

Guoliang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study compared dose delivery efficiency between two proton FLASH modes: passive scattering and pencil beam scanning. Through quantitative comparisons of different scenarios, the study established benchmarks for dose rate performance, considering components along the beamline, field size, and beam current. The results enable prediction and comparison of the required beam current to achieve sufficiently high dose rates for the FLASH effect.

A static beam delivery device for fast scanning proton arc-therapy

K. P. Nesteruk et al.

Summary: Arc-therapy is a promising technique for delivering radiation dose in cancer treatment, aiming to improve dose conformity around tumors. The feasibility study of a new static fast beam delivery device for proton-arc therapy shows potential for reducing total treatment time and addressing beam optics challenges. With rapid settings of proton beam angles, this device could provide a quicker and more efficient delivery method for proton therapy.

Proton linac-based therapy facility for ultra-high dose rate (FLASH) treatment

Wen-Cheng Fang et al.

Summary: FLASH radiotherapy, as a breakthrough in radiotherapy development, has been shown to be less harmful to healthy tissues. However, current proton therapy facilities are unable to achieve the high dose rate required for FLASH treatments. A new facility design based on a proton linear accelerator is proposed to address this limitation and achieve ultra-high dose rates.

Spread-out Bragg peak proton FLASH irradiation using a clinical synchrocyclotron: Proof of concept and ion chamber characterization

Arash Darafsheh et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the feasibility of delivering protons in an SOBP pattern with >100 Gy/s average dose rate using a clinical synchrocyclotron. Dose heterogeneity can be improved through optimization of the range modulator and number of delivered spots. Plane-parallel chambers with smaller gap between electrodes are more suitable for FLASH dosimetry compared to other ion chambers used in this work.
