Seroepidemiology of Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever among cattle in Cameroon: Implications from a One Health perspective

Lina Gonzalez Gordon et al.

Summary: This study found a high proportion of cattle with CCHFV antibodies, suggesting high levels of viral circulation in Cameroon. Factors such as transhumance, age, shrub density, and absolute humidity were associated with CCHFV seropositivity in cattle. The results highlight the need for vigilance to protect pastoral and dairy communities in the region from potential disease risks.

Prevalence of serum antibodies of tick-borne diseases and the presence of Rhipicephalus microplus in communal grazing cattle in the north-eastern region of the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa

Mandla Yawa et al.

Summary: The study conducted a survey to determine the prevalence of tick-borne diseases and ticks infesting cattle in the communal areas of the north-eastern region of the Eastern Cape Province between January 2019 and October 2019. It found that the highest tick loads on cattle were observed during the hot-wet and post-rainy seasons, while the lowest tick loads were observed during the cool-dry season. Certain TBDs showed specific prevalence rates in different seasons and were correlated with the cattle's body condition scores and packed cell volume. Further research is needed to understand the seroprevalence and transmission mode of TBDs in order to develop effective disease control measures.

The tropical lineage of the brown dog tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato identified as Rhipicephalus linnaei (Audouin, 1826)

Jan Slapeta et al.

Summary: A distinct species of the brown dog tick Rhipicephalus linnaei has been identified in Australia, differing from other known species within the complex. Whole genome sequencing and assembly of mitochondrial DNA have confirmed its genetic identity. This new designation is supported by material from the Australian National Insect Collection.

Risk factors associated with exposure to Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus in animal workers and cattle, and molecular detection in ticks, South Africa

Veerle Msimang et al.

Summary: The investigation in central South Africa found a high CCHFV IgG seroprevalence in cattle at 74.2% and in farm and wildlife workers at 3.9%, with no seropositive cases in veterinary personnel or abattoir workers. The study also revealed a significant geographical variation in seroprevalence, with seropositivity increasing with age and in individuals handling livestock. The presence of CCHFV RNA was higher in Hyalomma truncatum ticks compared to H. rufipes.

Preliminary comparative analysis of the resolving power of COX1 and 16S-rDNA as molecular markers for the identification of ticks from Portugal

Diogo Filipe et al.

Summary: The utility of COX1 and 16S-rDNA sequence analyses as a complementary tool for identifying common hard tick species in Portugal was evaluated. Both markers were suitable for identifying ticks at a species level, but specific limitations should be considered. Accurate identification of ticks at all life stages and of other tick species in Southern Europe is necessary.
