Nonlinear damping and mass effects of electromagnetic shunt damping for enhanced nonlinear vibration isolation

Hongye Ma et al.

Summary: This study investigates the nonlinear mass and damping effects of nonlinear electromagnetic shunt damping on the vibration isolation performance of a permanent magnets based nonlinear vibration isolator. By designing a specific electromagnetic structure and analyzing the mechanic-electromagnetic coupling coefficient, equivalent nonlinear damping and mass are achieved. The use of inductance is found to change the mass and frequency response of the vibration isolator.

Metamaterial beam with graded local resonators for broadband vibration suppression

Guobiao Hu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates a technique for broadband vibration suppression using a graded metamaterial beam, proposes a design strategy and defines three figures of merit to evaluate its performance. A parametric study reveals the effects of frequency spacing and damping ratio on the vibration suppression performance, and shows that by tuning these parameters, a significant increase in attenuation bandwidth can be achieved.

Effect of prestress on phononic band gaps induced by inertial amplification

M. Miniaci et al.

Summary: Phononic crystals and elastic metamaterials have received attention for unconventional wave control. Structures with adaptive elastic properties have been proposed for wave manipulation. External mechanical load can significantly impact band gaps induced by inertial amplification, showing notable shifts and dispersion changes. The application of external prestress can switch the structure's behavior from pass-band to stop-band, providing opportunities for real-time tunable wave manipulation.

Bandgap properties in metamaterial sandwich plate with periodically embedded plate-type resonators

Qiang Wang et al.

Summary: A novel plate-type resonator and its bandgap properties in a metamaterial sandwich plate were studied in this research. The results showed the existence of locally resonant and Bragg bandgaps in the proposed structure. The effects of geometric parameters and surface mass ratio on the bandgaps were investigated, along with the improvements of the resonator structure to enhance performance.

Summary: The paper evaluates the effectiveness of nonlinear viscoelastic damping in controlling base-excited vibrations. It investigates the robustness of nonlinear base isolation performance in controlling system response to a wide set of possible excitation spectra, showing that tuned nonlinear RLRB provides loads isolation in a wider range of excitation spectra.

Nonlinear vibration characteristics of fibre reinforced composite cylindrical shells in thermal environment

Hui Li et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an analytical model for fiber reinforced polymer composite cylindrical shells (FRPCCSs) considering material and geometric nonlinearities and thermal effects, which can predict natural frequencies, damping ratios, and resonant responses. Experimental validation shows that the natural frequencies of composite shell specimens initially decrease and then increase with increasing excitation amplitude, while damping ratios and resonant responses of FRPCCSs increase with excitation amplitude and environmental temperature. The study also highlights the significant effect of environmental temperature on the damping performance of FRPCCSs.

Sound singularity analysis for milling tool condition monitoring towards sustainable manufacturing

Chang'an Zhou et al.

Summary: Manufacturing industries are recognizing sustainable manufacturing technology as an important future trend due to environmental protection enhancement and global energy and resource shortages. A robust and efficient Tool Condition Monitoring (TCM) system is needed to maximize tool life, ensure work-piece quality, and benefit cost control. Research has proposed a sound singularity analysis approach for TCM in milling, using a de-noising algorithm based on WTMM estimation and a wavelet basis selection method for optimal sound singularity analysis.
