Model-free estimation of COVID-19 transmission dynamics from a complete outbreak

Alex James et al.

Summary: New Zealand had 1499 cases of COVID-19 before eliminating transmission of the virus. Extensive contact tracing during the outbreak led to a dataset of epidemiologically linked cases. Research found that children were under-represented in the case data, superspreading played a significant role in epidemic dynamics, and border controls and social distancing measures targeted at superspreading were crucial in reducing the spread of COVID-19.

Successful contact tracing systems for COVID-19 rely on effective quarantine and isolation

A. James et al.

Summary: Research indicates that the reduction in onward transmission during quarantine and isolation has a greater impact on lowering the effective reproduction number than tracing coverage. Performance indicators in contact tracing, such as the proportion of contacts quarantined before symptom onset, may not always correlate well with the reproduction number. Therefore, providing support systems for effective quarantine and isolation is crucial for the success of contact tracing.
