Developing a low-alloyed fine-grained Mg alloy with high strength-ductility based on dislocation evolution and grain boundary segregation

Zhi Zhang et al.

Summary: A new low-alloyed Mg-2Sm-0.8Mn-0.6Ca-0.5Zn alloy is prepared by low-temperature and low-speed extrusion, which exhibits high strength but low ductility. After annealing, the alloy shows both high strength and high ductility due to the effective inhibition of grain growth by grain boundary co-segregation and decreased dislocation density. The evolution of immovable long dislocations towards new grain boundaries is a key factor for the remarkable increase of ductility in the annealed alloy.

Towards developing Mg alloys with simultaneously improved strength and corrosion resistance via RE alloying

Jinshu Xie et al.

Summary: Magnesium alloys have great application potential, but improvements in both strength and corrosion resistance are still needed. The addition of rare earth elements can enhance the performance of magnesium alloys, but further research is necessary to improve both strength and anti-corrosion properties.

Microstructure and mechanical properties of high-strength high-pressure die-cast Mg-4Al-3La-1Ca-0.3Mn alloy

Peng-Fei Qin et al.

Summary: The new high-pressure die-cast (HPDC) Mg-4Al-3La-1Ca-0.3Mn (ALaX431) alloy achieves higher strength than existing HPDC Mg alloys, mainly due to the formation of fine grained structure, semi-continuous reticular structure, and nanoscale precipitates. Consequently, it has great potential for wide application.

Interface behavior and tensile properties of Mg-14Li-3Al-2Gd sheets prepared by four-layer accumulative roll bonding

Zhen Wei et al.

Summary: Mg-14Li-3Al-2Gd sheets were prepared using four-layer accumulative roll bonding (ARB) with two-step rolling in one cycle. The study found that in the ARB process, the number of grains in the normal direction decreased rapidly while the grain size decreased gradually. As the ARB cycle increased, the microstructure evolution shifted from single-layer to multi-layer, leading to increased strength and interfacial bond strength, but a decrease in plasticity.

Effect of Ca addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of heat-treated Mg-6.0Zn-1.2Y-0.7Zr alloy

Young-Gil Jung et al.

Summary: The addition of Ca improved the ignition resistance and refined the grains of the ZWK611 alloy, leading to enhanced mechanical properties at both room temperature and 150 degrees C. The presence of Tau- and W-phases, as well as the more uniform distribution of MgZn' precipitates in the Ca-added alloys, contributed to the improved performance of the T6-treated alloys.

Effects of content and distribution of Zn and Gd on formation ability of I phase and W phase in Mg-Zn-Gd-Zr alloy

Feng Guo et al.

Summary: The solid solution and compounds in Mg-Zn-Gd-Zr magnesium alloy semicontinuous casting ingots were effectively separated by phase separation technique. It was found that increasing the Zn/Gd ratio in the as-cast alloys increases the ratio of I and W phases, while increasing the content of Zn and Gd under a certain Zn/Gd ratio increases the amount of I and W phases simultaneously.

Effect of Heat Treatment on Low-Cycle Fatigue Performance of LZ91 Mg-Li Alloy

Yang Li et al.

Summary: The effects of heat treatment on the microstructure, tensile properties, and low-cycle fatigue properties of the LZ91 Mg-Li alloy were investigated. The results showed that heat treatment led to spheroidization of the alpha-phase and redistribution of a portion of the needle-like alpha-phase at the beta-phase grain boundary. The ultimate tensile strength and elongation of the material increased by 9.6% and 20% respectively, while the low-cycle fatigue life was improved. The initiation of fatigue cracks on the surface of specimens, mainly in the beta-phase, was suppressed by the needle-like alpha-phase, and the increased alpha-phase microhardness decelerated the crack growth rate, enhancing the low-cycle fatigue life of the alloy.
