Non-equivalence contribution of geometrically necessary dislocation and statistically stored dislocation in work-hardened metals

Nan Wang et al.

Summary: This study reveals the different contributions of geometrically necessary dislocation (GND) and statistically stored dislocation (SSD) to work hardening in dual-phase steel. By introducing high-density GND through pre-tensile loading-unloading-reloading (LUR) and high-density SSD through monotonic pre-tensile, it is found that the steel with high GND exhibits higher yield stress and stronger strain hardening ability compared to the high-SSD steel, even with almost the same total dislocation density.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of Sc on the plasticity of ultrafine-grained Al-0.5%Mg alloys at elevated temperatures (from 300 to 500 degrees C) and strain rates (from 10(-3) to 10(-1) s(-1)), showing that the addition of 0.4% and 0.5% Sc can achieve high elongation to failure at 500 degrees C and 1.10(-1) s(-1) strain rate.

Microstructure evolution during superplastic deformation process and its impact on superplastic behavior of a Mg-Gd-Y-Zn-Zr alloy

Chao Sun et al.

Summary: The microstructure evolution during superplastic deformation process and its impact on superplastic behavior of a Mg-10Gd-3Y-1.5Zn-1Zr alloy were studied. The alloy exhibited superplasticity between 400-475 degrees C, with grain boundary sliding controlled by grain boundary diffusion as the dominant deformation mechanism. After high temperature tensile test, changes including disappearance of Mg3Gd phase, emergence of Mg24Y5 phase, and varying volume fraction of 14H LPSO phase were observed. The alloy achieved the highest superplastic elongation at 450 degrees C with a strain rate of 5 x 10(-3) s(-1) due to the presence of 14H LPSO and Mg24Y5 phases and fragmentation of Mg24Y5 particles.

Microhardness model based on geometrically necessary dislocations for heterogeneous material

Summary: This study extends the analysis of the indentation size effect (ISE) to lamellar cast irons, demonstrating that the tensile model and the concept of geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs) can be used to predict the ISE of the pearlitic matrix within these materials. The summation of stresses associated with GNDs and statistically stored dislocations (SSDs) is shown to be more adequate in the prediction of ISE compared to considering only one work-hardening stress.

Microstructure evolution and mechanical responses of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys during hot deformation process

Yue Guo et al.

Summary: Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys can be processed by thermo-mechanical methods for applications in aeronautic, automobile, and marine industries. Achieving a balance between high strength and favorable ductility is still a ongoing challenge, with temperature and strain rate being key external variables. The complexity of microstructure evolution during hot deformation plays a crucial role in determining the mechanical responses and performance of these alloys.

Superplastic behavior of an in-situ TiB2 particle reinforced aluminum matrix composite processed by elliptical cross-section torsion extrusion

Summary: In this study, a severe plastic deformation method, E-TE, was used to achieve superplasticity in an in-situ TiB2/Al-Zn-Mg-Cu composite by optimizing the microstructure. Tensile tests revealed that the composite showed excellent superplastic behavior at specific temperatures and strain rates, achieving elongations up to 420%. The deformation and failure mechanisms of the composite varied with temperature, with different mechanisms observed at different temperature ranges.
