Characterization of deformation-induced martensite with various AGSs upon Charpy impact loading and correlation with transformation mechanisms

Minghao Huang et al.

Summary: Deformation-induced martensitic transformation (DIMT) is considered as a key strengthening mechanism in advanced high-strength steels (AHSS). However, systematic investigations on the transformation at high strain-rates are limited due to experimental difficulties. In this study, interrupted Charpy tests were conducted to study the transformation sequence of DIMT under high strain-rates. The results revealed that the nucleation sites and morphology of transformed alpha'-martensite changed with the increasing austenite grain sizes (AGSs), and the transformation sequence can be explained by considering the stacking fault energy and twinning nucleation stress of austenite.

Role of martensitic transformation sequences on deformation-induced martensitic transformation at high strain rates: A quasi in-situ study

Minghao Huang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the mechanical behavior of steels with metastable austenite and found that high strain rates can inhibit martensitic transformation, leading to a limitation in alloy design. Experimental results showed that as the strain rate increased, martensitic transformation sequences changed, ultimately suppressing DIMT kinetics. The work provides methods to enhance DIMT behavior by tailoring martensitic transformation sequences, offering a comprehensive explanation for the strain-rate dependence of DIMT.

Grain size dependence of twinning behaviors and resultant cryogenic impact toughness in high manganese austenitic steel

Jun Chen et al.

Summary: Two high manganese austenitic steels with different grain sizes were prepared to investigate size effect on twinning and cryogenic impact toughness. Increasing grain size from 11 to 47 μm enhanced Charpy impact absorbed energy by 36%, showing an inverse size effect on cryogenic impact toughness. The larger grain size resulted in better impact toughness at -196 degrees C due to stronger dynamic grain refinement, higher dislocation density, wider extended dislocations, and relatively homogeneous plastic deformation.

Evaluation of strain-induced martensite formation and mechanical properties in N-alloyed austenitic stainless steels by in situ tensile tests

C. Quitzke et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of nitrogen content on the mechanical properties and strain-induced alpha'-martensite formation behavior of austenitic stainless steel. The results showed that as nitrogen content decreases, the volume fraction of alpha'-martensite formation and the triggering stress both decrease. Microstructure analysis revealed a transition in deformation mechanisms from Transformation Induced Plasticity to Twinning Induced Plasticity behavior with increasing temperature. Additionally, the steel with 0.19 wt.% nitrogen demonstrated the highest tensile strength and excellent total elongation at room temperature compared to other examined steels.

Summary: Austenitic high-Mn steels exhibit a combination of twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP) and transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) mechanisms, with partial recrystallization enhancing yield strength achieved by the precipitation of (V + Mo) complex carbides. Adding aluminum alloy can increase yield strength and achieve 1 GPa of yield strength.
