This study reports in-situ transmission electron microscopy observations on the interaction between dislocations and beta' phases in aged Mg-Gd alloys. It was found that the slipping < a > dislocations are squashed into the interface and bow out to bypass the beta' phase, resulting in a zigzag route of plastic flow. The Orowan mechanism is determined as the main strengthening mechanism.
