Mechanical evaluation of WC-Co materials with varying microstructures

John J. Pittari et al.

Summary: In this study, the effect of binder phase on the mechanical properties of tungsten carbide-cobalt materials with different grain sizes was investigated. The results showed that a decrease in grain size led to an increase in hardness and tensile strength, while fracture toughness exhibited an opposite trend. Flexure strength did not show a correlation with grain size. Fractographic analysis identified the primary strength-limiting flaw as porosity, with other flaws types also identified.

Extraordinary high-temperature mechanical properties in binder-free nanopolycrystalline WC ceramic

Hongfeng Dong et al.

Summary: The binder-free nanopolycrystalline WC ceramic obtained by high-pressure and high-temperature sintering exhibits excellent mechanical properties at both room temperature and high temperature up to 1000 degrees C. It maintains a considerably high Vicker hardness at high temperature, showing outstanding thermo-mechanical stability superior to typical technical ceramics like SiC, Si3N4, Al2O3, etc. The nanocrystalline grains with dislocations and low-energy E2 grain boundaries contribute to its exceptional high-temperature mechanical properties.

High-temperature mechanical behavior of ultra-coarse cemented carbide with grain strengthening

Huaxin Hu et al.

Summary: This study proposes a method to enhance the high temperature compression strength of ultra-coarse cemented carbides by modulating hard matrix grains using activated TaC nanoparticles, through solid solution strengthening of Ta atoms. The mechanisms of Ta dissolution in WC crystal and strengthening of ultra-coarse grains through interaction with dislocations were revealed at the atomic scale.

Effects of residual thermal stress on mechanical behavior of cermets with different grain sizes

Jinghong Chen et al.

Summary: The distribution of residual thermal stress in cermets and its interaction with applied stress were studied in WC-Co cemented carbides. The study found that WC grain size significantly influences the residual thermal stress, with smaller grain size, lower Co thin-layer proportion, and higher triple junction proportion beneficial for reducing stress concentration. In cermets with residual thermal stress, the metallic binder shows an increasing strain response rate under external loading, providing insights into adjusting stress distribution for improved mechanical properties.

In-situ investigation of strain partitioning and microstructural strain path development up to and beyond necking

Hyun Seok Oh et al.

Summary: Multi-phase metallic materials exhibit strain partitioning and localization during plastic deformation, but the understanding of high strain levels and spatial variations in strain path development at the micro-scale is lacking. A practical method using in-situ SEM mechanical tests of pre-strained samples has been developed to address these challenges, providing insights into the strain behavior at different deformation levels in dual-phase steel.

Microstructure scale modelling of the WC and Co phases plastic behaviour in the WC-Co composite with different cobalt contents and for different temperatures. Comparison of the Drucker-Prager and Mises models

K. E. Agode et al.

Summary: Despite years of research, understanding the behavior of tungsten carbide (WC-Co) under complex thermomechanical loading remains incomplete. This study successfully simulated the elastoplastic behavior of WC-Co composites at temperatures up to 900 degrees C by creating realistic microstructures and determining representative volume elements. By introducing temperature functions and modeling the behavior of both phases, the numerical simulation results were in good agreement with experimental data for the composite's compressive loading behavior.
