Secondary Austenite Formation During Aging of Hot-Rolled Plate of a TRIP-Aided Mo-Free Lean Duplex Stainless Steel

Jeom Yong Choi et al.

Summary: The research investigated the precipitation and phase transformation during the aging of a newly developed Mo-free lean duplex stainless steel. The study found that Cr2N and secondary austenite precipitated during aging, while the formation of sigma phase and carbides was suppressed due to the absence of Mo. Additionally, a zone of Cr and N depletion formed, leading to the consumption of primary austenite and formation of secondary austenite.

Interstitial effects on the incipient plasticity and dislocation behavior of a metastable high-entropy alloy: Nanoindentation experiments and statistical modeling

Kefu Gan et al.

Summary: Metastable high-entropy alloys exhibit excellent strength-plasticity synergy through partial dislocation-assisted twinning and/or displacive transformation. This study provides quantitative insights into dislocation nucleation and the effects of interstitial alloying elements using instrumented nanoindentation experiments and statistical physical modeling, shedding light on the fundamental mechanisms in these emerging materials.

Influence of Microstructure Constituents on the Hydrogen-Induced Mechanical Degradation in Ultra-High Strength Sheet Steels

A. In Hwang et al.

Summary: The presence of austenite in ultra-high strength sheet steels plays a crucial role in hydrogen absorption and hydrogen-induced mechanical degradation. Austenite in TRIP steel leads to continuous hydrogen absorption for up to 48 hours, contributing to increased mechanical degradation beyond 12 hours of charging time.

Temperature- and strain-dependent thermally-activated deformation mechanism of a ferrous medium-entropy alloy

Jungwan Lee et al.

Summary: This study investigated the quasi-static tensile properties of Fe60Co15Ni15Cr10 ferrous medium-entropy alloy at 298 K and 77 K in terms of thermally-activated deformation mechanism. The alloy showed relatively high strain rate sensitivity and low activation volume at 77 K, where deformation-induced martensitic transformation occurred. Different rate-controlling mechanisms were identified at both temperatures for early and latter deformation, with dislocation behaviors supporting the outstanding cryogenic tensile properties of the alloy.

Modeling the work hardening behavior in metastable high entropy alloys

Ravi Sankar Haridas et al.

Summary: The mechanical response of TRIP-enabled metastable high entropy alloys is characterized by a constant work hardening segment followed by stages of gradual drop in work hardening under uniaxial tension. A four-parameter empirical model based on this work hardening curve has been developed and offers ease of identification from macroscopic mechanical response. Insights can be drawn from the model parameters when fitted to the tensile deformation response of TRIP HEAs, and a method to predict the tensile mechanical response based on correlated parameters with stacking fault energy and microstructure is proposed.

Deformation behavior of a Co-Cr-Fe-Ni-Mo medium-entropy alloy at extremely low temperatures

Jongun Moon et al.

Summary: The medium-entropy alloy Co17.5Cr12.5Fe55Ni10Mo5 demonstrates excellent mechanical properties at cryogenic temperatures, showing high strength, ductility, and strain hardening. It exhibits several unusual features within the extremely low temperature range of 0.5-4.2 K, including anomalies in the temperature dependence of yield strength and tensile ductility, discontinuous plastic deformation (DPF), and changes in deformation-induced martensitic transformation tendency. The observed phenomena may be interrelated and require further investigation.
