Microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of Al-8wt. % Si semi-solid billet fabricated by powder metallurgy liquid phase reaction sintering

Summary: The study investigated the reaction mechanism of Al and Si elemental powders, as well as the thermodynamics and dynamics of the reaction process. The liquid phase content increased with reaction temperature and time. The kinetic model accurately predicted the actual liquid phase formation fraction, and increasing reaction temperature decreased the liquid phase viscosity while increasing the Si atom diffusion coefficient to enhance liquid phase formation rate.

Microstructural properties, thermodynamics and kinetics of Al-Si semi-solid billet fabricated by liquid phase reaction sintering

Summary: A method of preparing Al-Si semi-solid billet by cold pressing and liquid phase reaction sintering with Al and Si elemental powders was proposed in this study. The experiment results showed that under certain conditions, controlling the silicon content and reaction temperature can improve the liquid phase content, increase the strength of the billet but reduce its elongation.
