Understanding the efficacy of concentrated interstitial carbon in enhancing the pitting corrosion resistance of stainless steel

Tianshu Li et al.

Summary: By low temperature carburization, high fraction of interstitial carbon can significantly enhance the pitting corrosion resistance of austenitic stainless steel. Contrary to previous beliefs that carbon strengthens the passive film, it actually weakens the film but strengthens the alloy by forming strong localized bonds with metal atoms. This new understanding suggests a novel strategy for designing corrosion resistant alloys through surface engineering with concentrated interstitials forming strong bonds with matrix atoms.

Precipitation formation on Σ5 and Σ7 grain boundaries in 316L stainless steel and their roles on intergranular corrosion

Shao-Pu Tsai et al.

Summary: In sensitized AISI 316L stainless steel samples attacked by an HF solution, it was found that Sigma 7 grain boundaries always show corrosion while Sigma 5 grain boundaries never do. The distinct corrosion behavior is related to the different precipitation behavior and surface features exhibited by the two types of grain boundaries.

Design for additive manufacturing from a force-flow perspective

Shuaishuai Li et al.

Summary: With the increasing use of additive manufacturing in industry, attention is focused on maximizing the structural efficiency of additively manufactured parts. This study explores a novel method for design for additive manufacturing (DFAM) at various scales from a force-flow perspective, aiming to integrate force-flow based design with additive manufacturing. By analyzing the characteristics of force-flow and its embodiment in nature and engineering, along with providing overviews of topology optimization, lattice/cellular structure design, and infill pattern design in combination with force-flow and additive manufacturing, the study proposes future directions for DFAM based on force flow.
