Characterization and modeling of concurrent precipitation in Mg-Al-Sn alloys using an improved Kampmann-Wagner numerical (KWN) model

Jiashi Miao et al.

Summary: This study quantitatively characterized the concurrent precipitation microstructure of Mg17Al12 and Mg2Sn phases in AT72 magnesium alloy using STEM techniques. An improved KWN model was used to simulate the evolution of the microstructure and predict the age hardening behavior, optimizing the composition and heat treatment procedure of precipitation strengthened alloys.

Coupled segregation mechanisms of Sc, Zr and Mn at θ′ interfaces enhances the strength and thermal stability of Al-Cu alloys

Lu Jiang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the addition of trace amounts of Sc, Zr, and Mn in Al-Cu alloys refines and stabilizes theta' precipitates, resulting in increased hardness and improved thermal stability of the alloy. The enhanced properties are attributed to the unique segregation mechanisms of Mn, Sc, and Zr at the interfaces of the theta' precipitates.

Uncovering the origin of enhanced strengthening in Li-added Al-Cu-Mg alloys

S. Y. Duan et al.

Summary: The addition of 0.5 wt% Li to an Al-Cu-Mg alloy results in significant strength increases without sacrificing ductility, mainly due to modified precipitation behavior. The strengthening sources in unstretched and stretched alloys are fundamentally different, with Li favoring a high density of GPB zones in unstretched alloys and refined S-phase precipitates in stretched alloys. These modified precipitates with Li enrichments elucidate the strengthening origin in Li-added Al-Cu-Mg alloys under various conditions.

Precipitation-hardness map for Al-Cu-Mg alloy (AA2024-T3)

V. A. Esin et al.

Summary: The precipitation map of Al-Cu-Mg alloy (AA2024-T3) was obtained by combining differential scanning calorimetry analysis and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy observations, revealing the appearance of equilibrium S-Al2CuMg phase at 85 degrees C after 1000 h of ageing. Hardness values showed that the maximum hardness was located at the boundary between S-phase + GPB zones and S-phase regions for all studied temperatures.

Precipitation processes and structural evolutions of various GPB zones and two types of S phases in a cold-rolled Al-Mg-Cu alloy

Xuanliang Chen et al.

Summary: The study investigated the age-hardening behavior and precipitates in an Al-3Mg-1Cu alloy, revealing common and novel GPB zones, as well as two types of S phases. Density functional theory calculations showed that GPBX zone is stable, with S-I and S-II phases having similar formation enthalpy. The transformation of GPB zones to S-I phases and preferential formation of S-II phases from GPBX zones along dislocation lines were observed.

Unravelling the precipitation evolutions of AZ80 magnesium alloy during non-isothermal and isothermal processes

Longqing Tang et al.

Summary: The precipitation evolutions of AZ80 magnesium alloy involve both discontinuous precipitation and continuous precipitation during non-isothermal and isothermal processes. The precipitation behavior is influenced by thermal history, holding temperature, and time. At lower temperatures, massive DP and CP are gradually formed to equally strengthen the alloy, while at higher temperatures, Ostwald coarsening occurs, leading to a slight softening of the alloy.

Good combination of strength and corrosion resistance in an Al-Cu-Mg alloy processed by a short-cycled thermomechanical treatment

L. Mei et al.

Summary: The research found that the warm rolled alloy showed significant improvement in strength and corrosion resistance after appropriate aging, with good ductility. This improvement was mainly attributed to a more homogeneous distribution of nanosized precipitates in the grain interior and the absence of continuous grain boundary precipitates.

Effect of pre-deformation on age-hardening behaviors in an Al-Mg-Cu alloy

Xuanliang Chen et al.

Summary: Pre-deformation has a strong impact on the subsequent age-hardening behavior of the Al-3Mg1Cu alloy, accelerates precipitation, enhances hardness peaks, inhibits cluster formation, and increases the amount of precipitates along dislocation lines. This study's findings are important for the advancement of combined mechanical deformation and heat treatment processes.
