Effect of hatch spacing and laser power on microstructure, texture, and thermomechanical properties of laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) additively manufactured NiTi

Sayed Ehsan Saghaian et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the effects of L-PBF-AM parameters on the thermomechanical behavior and microstructure of Ni50.8Ti49.2 shape memory alloy. The results show that the size of melt pool decreases and scan tracks become discontinuous with decreasing laser power. Porosity level increases with larger hatch spacing and lower laser power. Transformation temperatures increase, and the critical stress, recoverable strain, and functional stability of samples improve with lower hatch spacing. L-PBF-AM can tailor the microstructure from highly textured samples to equiaxed solidification front with island grains and random orientations.

Laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing of highly conductive parts made of optically absorptive carburized CuCr1 powder

Suraj Dinkar Jadhav et al.

Summary: This article explores the use of optically absorptive surface-modified copper powders for fabricating fully dense and highly conductive copper alloy parts via laser-based additive manufacturing (L-AM). It discusses the densification mechanism of parts and the distinct processing behaviors of different surface-modified powders. The advantage of a firmly bonded modified layer present on the surface of carburized CuCr1 powder over a loosely attached carbon nanoparticle layer in carbon-mixed CuCr1 powder is clearly outlined, with customized final properties achievable through tailored post-heat treatments.

Reflectance spectroscopy of ilmenites and related Ti and Ti-Fe oxides (200 to 2500 nm): Spectral-compositional-structural relationships

Matthew R. M. Izawa et al.

Summary: This study examines the spectral properties of ilmenite and related Fe-Ti oxides, finding that ilmenite shows an increase in reflectance in the UV region, which can be used to detect its presence in mixtures. Ilmenite differs significantly from silicates below 500nm, showing diagnostic spectral features that can be used to determine its presence.

Effects of the powder, laser parameters and surface conditions on the molten pool formation in the selective laser melting of IN718

Yuze Li et al.

Summary: A series of single-track selective laser melting experiments were conducted on IN718 plates with and without a powder layer, with different laser processing parameters and surface conditions. The study systematically investigated the impacts of powder, laser parameters, and surface conditions on the formation of the molten pool in SLM, and identified correlations between the dimensions of the molten pool and the parameters. Furthermore, the occurrence of defects in the SLM process was investigated and linked to specific parameters, leading to the proposal of a processing map for defect-free solidification.

The causal relationship between melt pool geometry and energy absorption measured in real time during laser-based manufacturing

Brian J. Simonds et al.

Summary: This study investigates laser absorption during laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing by monitoring laser backscattered intensity and X-ray imaging. Laser absorption strongly reflects the stability of the vapor depression, oxygen content, and presence of powder, and may lead to reduced absorption and porosity during scanning. The findings suggest the potential of using a total backscattered light detection system for real-time process control.
