Environmental monitoring and external exposure to natural radiation in Canada

Chuanlei Liu et al.

Summary: External sources of radiation, including cosmic rays and natural radioactive elements, contribute to people's exposure to radiation. Analysis of environment monitoring data in Canada shows that absorbed dose rates from terrestrial radiation vary geographically and seasonally, while absorbed dose rates from cosmic rays depend on elevation and solar activities. The population-weighted annual effective dose for Canadians is mainly from indoor activities, with a smaller contribution from terrestrial radiation.

Indoor radon exposure and its correlation with the radiometric map of uranium in Sweden

Bart Olsthoorn et al.

Summary: Indoor radon concentrations are influenced by both geological and human factors. A study in Sweden found a positive correlation between underground uranium levels and measured radon in households. Modern construction effectively reduces indoor radon concentrations, minimizing the correlation with background uranium levels and associated health risks.

Natural radioactivity in the prospecting tunnel in Egypt: Dose rate and risk assessment

M. Y. Hanfi et al.

Summary: The study found that the activity concentrations of 238U, 232Th, and 40K were significantly higher than the global average in the prospecting tunnel, but the annual effective dose contributed by gamma radiation was below the recommended limit. However, long-term exposure to extracted raw materials may cause health issues.

Natural radioactivity and radiological risks of common building materials used in Semnan Province dwellings, Iran

Morteza Imani et al.

Summary: The radiological survey conducted in Semnan Province, Iran, measured activity concentrations of Ra-226, Th-232, and K-40 in common building materials. Statistical analysis including Pearson correlation, cluster, and principal component analyses indicated that the main radiological health hazard parameters are related to the concentrations of Ra-226 and Th-232.

Radiological Investigation on Sediments: A Case Study of Wadi Rod Elsayalla the Southeastern Desert of Egypt

Ahmed E. Abdel Gawad et al.

Summary: The studied granitoids contained heavy radioactive minerals which led to the investigation of exposure to emitted gamma rays from terrestrial radionuclides. The results showed that the Wadi sediments were derived from surrounding granitoids enriched with radioactive minerals, exceeding the recommended limits for U-238, Th-232, and K-40 concentrations. Public exposure to emitted gamma radiation was found to have various dangerous health effects, indicating that the use of these sediments in building materials is not safe.

Radiological survey on radon entry path in an underground mine and implementation of an optimized mitigation system

Amin Shahrokhi et al.

Summary: The study identified high concentrations of radon in mine ores and found that the primary source of radon during mining activities was the recently fragmented ores. By implementing an optimized mitigation system, radon concentrations were successfully reduced in the underground manganese mine.
