Northward migration of the Javanese volcanic arc along thrust faults

Matteo Lupi et al.

Summary: This study reveals the spatial and structural relationships between the volcanic arc and the back-arc domains in East Java through seismic tomography, suggesting that magmas and hydrothermal fluids may migrate into sedimentary basins through existing thrust faults. The results highlight a clear connection between the plumbing system of the volcanic arc and the northern sedimentary province.

Reutilisation of hydrothermal vent complexes for focused fluid flow on continental margins (Modgunn Arch, Norwegian Sea)

Chantelle Roelofse et al.

Summary: The study in mid-Norwegian margin reveals abundant igneous activity, with magmatic sills and hydrothermal vent complexes being repeatedly utilised in the Paleocene-Eocene period. The vent complexes show large eruptions of hydrothermal fluids vertically through the same conduit, highlighting the importance of characterising ancient magmatic structures. The reutilisation of magmatic structures may lead to new plays and renew interest in exploring magma-rich continental margins.

Tectonic insight and 3-D modelling of the Lusi (Java, Indonesia) mud edifice through gravity analyses

Alvaro Osorio Riffo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the subsurface structures of the Lusi sediment-hosted hydrothermal system in Indonesia using detailed gravimetric and 3-D geological models. Negative gravity anomaly zones at Lusi are interpreted as fractured areas allowing fluids to ascend towards the surface. The results may be beneficial for future geothermal resource exploitation and risk mitigation plans related to maintaining man-made embankments.

Multi-GPU based 3D numerical modeling of fluid migration and clay dehydration influence on Lusi hydrothermal activity (Java, Indonesia)

Reza Sohrabi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of clay dehydration, mass and heat transport on fluid outflow at the Lusi site using a fully coupled 3D model. The simulations show that high-pressure fluids generated by dehydration reactions significantly affect porosity and permeability structures in the deep hydrothermal system.

Surface structure, activity and microgravimetry modeling delineate contrasted mud chamber types below flat and conical mud volcanoes from Azerbaijan

Francis Odonne et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the morphology contrast between flat and conical mud volcanoes in Azerbaijan is influenced by both surface and subsurface structures, with different growth mechanisms and depth of mud chambers for each type of volcano. Flat mud volcanoes primarily grow through radial expansion and compression of the flanks, while conical mud volcanoes grow by flow stacking in the summit caldera, constrained by the caldera rim.

Widespread hydrothermal vents and associated volcanism record prolonged Cenozoic magmatism in the South China Sea

Fang Zhao et al.

Summary: The continental margin of the northern South China Sea is a magma-poor rifted margin. Extensive magmatic processes have reshaped this margin, leading to the presence of hydrothermal vent complexes and magmatic edifices such as volcanoes, igneous sills, and lava flows. The occurrence of hydrothermal vents close to the seafloor, along with evidence of shallow igneous sills, suggests ongoing fluid seepage and post-rift magmatism possibly linked to a mantle plume effect.

3D Deep Electrical Resistivity Tomography of the Lusi Eruption Site in East Java

Adriano Mazzini et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the subsided area in the Lusi region hosts a mixture of groundwater, mud breccia, hydrocarbons and boiling hydrothermal fluids. It also points out the connection between a well-developed fault system and the upwelling of deep-seated fluids that initiated and continue to drive the development of the new-born Lusi eruption.
