Comparative genomics reveals insights into cyanobacterial evolution and habitat adaptation

Meng-Yun Chen et al.

Summary: Based on phylogenetic and comparative genomic analyses of 650 cyanobacterial genomes, this study revealed that terrestrial cyanobacteria expand gene families to cope with fluctuating environments, while many marine strains undergo gene contraction to adapt to nutrient-poor conditions. Genes strongly associated with specific habitats, such as those involved in light sensing, chemotaxis, and nutrient transporters, are crucial for the survival and adaptation of cyanobacteria. Furthermore, a significant proportion of genes facilitating habitat adaptation are acquired through horizontal gene transfer, with terrestrial cyanobacteria showing higher rates of genetic exchanges.

A single-cell polony method reveals low levels of infectedProchlorococcusin oligotrophic waters despite high cyanophage abundances

Noor Mruwat et al.

Summary: Long-term stability of picocyanobacteria in the open oceans is maintained by a balance between division and death, with viruses being a major source of microbial mortality. A new method combining flow-cytometric sorting with a PCR-based polony technique enables the quantification of infection by different virus lineages, revealing that only a small percentage of Prochlorococcus are infected by T4-like cyanophages in the North Pacific subtropical surface waters. This method provides insights into virus impact on microbial communities and ecosystem processes.

Highly enriched N-containing organic molecules of Synechococcus lysates and their rapid transformation by heterotrophic bacteria

Qiang Zheng et al.

Summary: Phytoplankton are major contributors of labile dissolved organic matter to marine euphotic zone ecosystems. Viral-mediated phytoplankton lysis releases a considerable amount of bioavailable cellular contents and facilitates localized heterotrophic bacterial growth. The study showed that viral lysis promoted the transformation ofSynechococcusbiomass to dissolved organic matter, and the organic molecules from relatively high molecular weight to low molecular weight, corresponding to variation in their bioavailability. TheSynechococcus-derived organic matter was highly enriched in N-containing organic molecules, and oligopeptides, nucleotides, and lipid compounds significantly increased with viral lysis.

Spatial and temporal variations in Synechococcus microdiversity in the Southern California coastal ecosystem

Maitreyi Nagarkar et al.

Summary: The study found that there are numerous Synechococcus amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) within the population at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography pier and in the Southern California coastal ecosystem. An anomalous bloom in August 2016 significantly increased the overall abundance of Synechococcus and introduced normally oligotrophic Synechococcus clade II into the population. This study also observed changes in clade and ASV composition during blooms, as well as more oligotrophic ASVs and clades further offshore.

Significant contribution of picoplankton size fraction to biogenic silica standing stocks in the Western Pacific Ocean

Yuqiu Wei et al.

Summary: The contribution of picoplankton size-fraction to total biogenic silica standing stocks in the Western Pacific Ocean has been underestimated in previous analyses. Picoplankton, especially marine picocyanobacteria, play a significant role in total bSi standing stocks. Water temperature may also impact the variability of picoplankton bSi stock.

Significant Pico- and Nanoplankton Contributions to Biogenic Silica Standing Stocks and Production Rates in the Oligotrophic Eastern Indian Ocean

Yuqiu Wei et al.

Summary: This study conducted the first measurements of size-fractionated biogenic silica standing stocks and production rates in the oligotrophic Eastern Indian Ocean, revealing that smaller plankton, especially pico- and nanoplankton, contribute significantly to both the total biogenic silica standing stock and its production rate. The data suggests a possible biological control over the size-fractionated biogenic silica standing stocks, with picoeukaryotes showing a clear correlation with <2 μm biogenic silica.

The moderating role of population succession in the adaptive responses of Synechococcus assemblages: evidence from light intensity simulation experiment

T. Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the response of Synechococcus assemblages to light intensity variation through experiments simulating different light intensities. The findings revealed changes in photosynthesis indications, pigment contents, phylogenetic compositions, and gene expression patterns in response to light intensity. The upregulation of photosynthesis-related genes corresponded to the population succession of Synechococcus, leading to physiological shifts in response to light intensity.

Molecular bases of an alternative dual-enzyme system for light color acclimation of marine Synechococcus cyanobacteria

Theophile Grebert et al.

Summary: Marine Synechococcus cyanobacteria utilize a wide pigment diversity in their light-harvesting complexes, allowing them to adapt to different light conditions through sophisticated chromatic acclimation mechanisms. These two types of chromatic acclimaters occupy distinct complementary ecological niches in the ocean, acquired through different genomic islands for adaptation to different light wavelengths.

Mixotrophic plankton and Synechococcus distribution in waters around Svalbard, Norway during June 2019

Bhaskar Parli et al.

Summary: The study investigated the influence of summer conditions on phytoplankton distribution off Svalbard, with a focus on diatoms, flagellates, and picoplankton. The data showed a dominance of dinoflagellates in the area, while diatoms were mainly found in colder polar waters. Synechococcus was identified as the predominant picoplankton, with its abundance positively correlated to nitrate and chlorophyll a levels. The data also suggested a potential role of melting glaciers and land run-off in increasing the picoplankton load in the waters.

Modeling Ocean Color Niche Selection by Synechococcus Blue-Green Acclimaters

R. Lovindeer et al.

Summary: The study found that greater mixed layer depths selected for generalists in simulated Synechococcus populations, but did not fully explain the differences in light-harvesting strategies in situ. Instead, oceanographic signatures for upwelling areas and ocean fronts were more explanatory for the variation between Synechococcus generalists and specialists in the ocean.

Phylogenetic and Phenogenetic Diversity of Synechococcus along a Yellow Sea Section Reveal Its Environmental Dependent Distribution and Co-Occurrence Microbial Pattern

Ting Wang et al.

Summary: The study focused on the phylogenetic and phenogenetic composition of Synechococcus in the coastal Yellow Sea, revealing its abundance correlation with sampling depth and nutrient contents. Eight phylogenetic lineages of Synechococcus were identified, with clade III being dominant. Phenogenetically, Synechococcus PT3 was the predominant pigment type. Co-occurrence analysis showed interactions with various prokaryotes and eukaryotes, suggesting potential roles in diverse element cycles.

Vibrational modes of water predict spectral niches for photosynthesis in lakes and oceans

Tadzio Holtrop et al.

Summary: By using a radiative transfer model, the authors identified five spectral niches in aquatic ecosystems based on the vibrational modes of water molecules. These niches, in the violet, blue, green, orange, and red parts of the spectrum, are effectively captured by chlorophylls and phycobilin pigments of cyanobacteria and their eukaryotic descendants. The global distributions of these spectral niches were predicted using remote sensing and validated with observed large-scale distribution patterns of cyanobacterial pigment types, providing an explanation for the biogeographical distributions of photosynthetic pigments across lakes and oceans.
