Study of fucoidans as natural biomolecules for therapeutical applications in osteoarthritis

Carlos Vaamonde-Garcia et al.

Summary: Experimental findings suggest that the chemical composition of fucoidan, particularly the content of phlorotannins and the ratio of sulfate to fucose, plays a critical role in its biological activity. Factors such as concentration and molecular weight of fucoidan may also impact its beneficial effects. Additionally, there is evidence of cell-type dependent responses to fucoidan.

The Monocytes That Repopulate in Mice After Cyclophosphamide Treatment Acquire a Neutrophil Precursor Gene Signature and Immunosuppressive Activity

Zhi-Chun Ding et al.

Summary: The expansion of myeloid cells induced by cyclophosphamide (CTX) is an intrinsic process of hematopoietic recovery after chemotherapy. The repopulated monocytes acquire long-lasting immunosuppressive activity and gene signature characteristic of neutrophil precursors. The expansion is regulated by DNA methyltransferase 1 (Dnmt1) and dependent on chemotherapy-induced microbial translocation.

Structural characterization and effect on leukopenia of fucoidan from Durvillaea antarctica

Yingjie Yang et al.

Summary: A novel fucoidan (F-4) was extracted and purified from Durvillaea antarctica, characterized by its sulfated polysaccharide structure mainly composed of fucose, galactose, and glucose. F-4 showed the ability to promote leukocyte growth in a mouse model induced by cyclophosphamide, possibly through activation of hematopoietic progenitor cells and regulation of bone marrow hematopoietic microenvironment.

Cathelicidin and PMB neutralize endotoxins by multifactorial mechanisms including LPS interaction and targeting of host cell membranes

Andra B. Schromm et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial peptides play an important role in defending against infections by interacting with microbial membranes and lipids, with endotoxin-induced hyperinflammation being a key factor. Host defense peptide and peptide antibiotic were shown to reduce endotoxin activation by directly interacting with host cells. This discovery of a host cell-directed mechanism of immune control provides valuable insights for the development and therapeutic use of AMPs.
