Froude supercritical flow processes and sedimentary structures: New insights from experiments with a wide range of grain sizes

Kenya Ono et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that supercritical-flow deposits with a wide range of grain sizes can have more complex sedimentary structures, and are not solely controlled by the Froude number. Surprisingly, it shows that supercritical flows can promote suspension transport of all grain sizes, including gravels. Comparison with outcrop datasets highlights the significant role of hydraulic jumps in producing lithologically and geometrically complex stratigraphy.

Reconstruction of bedform dynamics controlled by supercritical flow in the channel-lobe transition zone of a deep-water delta (Sant Llorenc del Munt, north-east Spain, Eocene)

George Postma et al.

Summary: This study investigates the complex bedform architecture of a deep-water delta slope, highlighting the intricacies of deposition in the channel-lobe transition zone which are often overlooked in complex sedimentary systems. The research utilizes a method developed for fluvial deposits to analyze high-definition, drone-derived images for architectural and facies studies, revealing the migration of hydraulic jump zones and the stacking of bedforms in the transition zone.

The depositional signature of cyclic steps: A late Quaternary analogue compared to modern active delta slopes

Jean-Francois Ghienne et al.

Summary: This study compared the depositional facies observed in late Quaternary sedimentary rocks from Quebec and Baffin Island, revealing similarities in sedimentary characteristics. By examining the sedimentary features of fossil and modern delta slopes, cyclic-step characteristics were identified, aiding in understanding the sedimentary processes and geological history.

LATERALLY ACCRETED DEPOSITS IN LOW EFFICIENCY TURBIDITES ASSOCIATED WITH A STRUCTURALLY-INDUCED TOPOGRAPHY (OLIGOCENE MOLARE GROUP, TERTIARY PIEDMONT BASIN, NW ITALY)

Roberto Tinterri et al.

Summary: The origin of laterally accreted deposits in ancient deep marine successions is often controversial, as they may not always imply the occurrence of meanders or high-sinuosity turbidite channels. This study suggests that these deposits may be generated by sediment-gravity-flow dynamics controlled by tectonically confined mini-basins. Detailed stratigraphic framework and facies analysis reveal an alternative interpretation for these deposits.

Re-examining models of shallow-water deltas: Insights from tank experiments and field examples

Jutta Winsemann et al.

Summary: The characteristics of mouth bars in shallow-water deltas are closely related to the properties of jets and the size of supplied sediment particles, with pure and stratified jets influencing the height, geometry, and bedforms of the mouth bars. The experiments suggest that different types of jets can lead to the formation of mouth bars with specific features and depositional processes.
