Recognition of in situ oil cracking in the Precambrian-Lower cambrian petroleum systems of sichuan basin, southwestern China

Youjun Tang et al.

Summary: By analyzing solid bitumen samples obtained from deep boreholes in the Precambrian and Lower Cambrian formations of the Moxi-Gaoshiti Bulge in Southwestern China, this study determines the location of paleo-oil cracking and provides evidence supporting the epigenetic origin of solid bitumen in reservoirs. Moreover, the study reveals the thermochemical sulfate reduction reaction between paleo-oil and dolomite reservoirs, shedding light on the formation mechanism of deep huge gas fields derived from paleo-oil cracking.

Natural gas accumulation in the basin-mountain transition zone, northwestern Sichuan Basin, China

Di Xiao et al.

Summary: The study investigated the middle Permian Qixia Formation in the piedmont of the Longmenshan Mountains in northwestern Sichuan Basin, China. It found that natural gas in the thrust belt was derived from lower Cambrian strata by oil cracking, while the thrust front and forebulge belts had high natural gas content and good preservation due to less deformation in the area. The research suggests that hydrocarbon resources in the (ultra-)deep strata in the basin-mountain transition zone could be an important exploration target globally.

Tectonic evolution of the Sichuan Basin, Southwest China

Shugen Liu et al.

Summary: Surface deformation in the Sichuan basin is influenced by two weak extension and compression episodes, leading to the formation of specific structures. The evolution of the basin appears to be controlled by deformation from its peripheral orogens rather than deep lithospheric and mantle processes.
