The ability to copolymerize monomers greatly expands the range of material properties that can be achieved for a specific monomer. We investigated the radical copolymerization of a lactone monomer, EVP, made from butadiene and carbon dioxide, and found that the unique bicyclic structure of EVP increased the glass transition temperature of commodity polymers and allowed for the incorporation of functionality.
The ability to copolymerize monomers vastly increases the range of accessible material properties for a specificmonomer. We investigate the radical copolymerization of the lactone monomer (3-ethylidene-6-vinyltetrahydro-2H-pyran-2-one)(EVP) made from butadiene and carbon dioxide. The unique bicyclic structure provided by the EVP unit resulted in an elevation ofthe glass transition temperature across a range of commodity polymers and enabled the incorporation of functionality into EVP-based copolymers
