Randy H. Ewoldt et al.

Summary: Taking a step away from Newtonian fluid behavior opens up a wide range of possibilities in terms of non-Newtonian fluid properties. This complexity introduces challenges that need to be addressed. The article explores useful rheological complexity, organizing principles, and design methods to answer questions related to the utility and attainment of non-Newtonian properties.

Mechanically Robust and Reprocessable Acrylate Vitrimers with Hydrogen-Bond-Integrated Networks for Photo-3D Printing

Hong Gao et al.

Summary: A new strategy is developed for enhancing the strength and reprocessability of 3D printing thermosets by combining hydrogen bonds and exchangeable beta-hydroxyl esters into acrylate vitrimers. With the inclusion of 20wt% acrylamide, the mechanical properties of the printed structures are significantly improved, reaching up to 40.1 MPa in tensile strength and 871 MPa in Young's modulus. This network rearrangement of cross-linked vitrimers through ester exchange reactions allows for reprocessability of printed structures, making them dissolve in ethylene glycol and be remolded.

Importance of Broad Temperature Windows and Multiple Rheological Approaches for Probing Viscoelasticity and Entropic Elasticity in Vitrimers

Laura E. Porath et al.

Summary: Polydimethylsiloxane telechelic vitrimers with dynamic boronic ester bonds were synthesized to investigate the viscoelastic properties of dynamic networks with extremely low T-g using multiple rheological approaches. Results show that the plateau modulus increases with temperature, while relaxation times decrease, indicating a decoupling of terminal dynamics from mechanics, and a transition from relaxation dominated by reaction exchange kinetics to relaxation dictated by local polymer dynamics. This study highlights the importance of assessing a broad temperature window and using multiple approaches in probing vitrimers and dynamic networks.

Unentangled Vitrimer Melts: Interplay between Chain Relaxation and Cross-link Exchange Controls Linear Rheology

Ralm G. Ricarte et al.

Summary: Vitrimers are polymer networks that undergo dynamic associative exchange reactions, exhibiting unique structure-viscoelasticity relationships. Utilizing a sticky Rouse model, the study explores the structure-viscoelasticity characteristics of unentangled vitrimer melts. The findings reveal that the structure and temperature significantly impact the zero-shear viscosity and characteristic relaxation time of vitrimers.

Neighboring Group Participation and Internal Catalysis Effects on Exchangeable Covalent Bonds: Application to the Thriving Field of Vitrimer Chemistry

Florian Cuminet et al.

Summary: Vitrimers are promising polymer materials with chemical resistance, reshaping ability, and unique rheological behavior, but many require high catalyst loadings, limiting their potential applications; internal catalysis and neighboring group participation can enhance the reshaping ability of such materials; knowledge on the effect of activating groups on exchange reactions in Vitrimers remains scarce.

Thermodynamics and Reaction Kinetics of Symmetric Vitrimers Based on Dioxaborolane Metathesis

Shilong Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the thermodynamics and reaction kinetics of symmetric vitrimers, showing that the plateau modulus and network relaxation rate are influenced by the dynamics of cross-linking and exchange reactions. Experimental results with a series of samples indicate that the plateau modulus increases with one precursor (F-A or F-B) and saturates, while the relaxation rate of the network decelerates with cross-linking before accelerating again.

Dynamic Enamine-one Bond Based Vitrimer via Amino-yne Click Reaction

Xinru Guo et al.

Summary: The vitrimer fabricated through amino-yne click chemistry exhibits superior mechanical properties and faster dynamic exchange compared to the reference vitrimer derived from amine-acetoacetate condensation, due to fewer network defects and less sterically hindered exchange reaction. The efficient and side product-free amino-yne reaction provides a powerful chemical tool for vitrimer fabrication and is potentially suitable for sealing and adhesion applications.

Effect of precise linker length, bond density, and broad temperature window on the rheological properties of ethylene vitrimers

Bhaskar Soman et al.

Summary: The study investigates high crosslink density telechelic ethylene vitrimers, showing that with increasing crosslink density, the rubbery plateau modulus increases and the terminal flow shifts to lower frequencies. The rubbery plateau modulus also increases with temperature. Analysis of zero shear viscosity, activation energy, crossover frequency, and shift factors reveals Arrhenius behavior in these networks.
